It's time to close the doors to the Temple of Janus.
The US constitution is the single most important man made document or contract known to man. It is the key piece of literature representing the age of enlightenment. It is the tie that binds us to the ideals that our forefathers had for our country when they seperated themselves from the Tyrany King George. The inalienable rights that it protects though the Bil of Rights are what has made America the single most powerful and important country this century. Outside of the Bible itself it provides the most empowerment to the individual than any other document ever written.
Parliementary Governments are very effecient, but usually unable to function for extremely large countrys like the US. The fact that the US is comprised of several cultural, geographical, and climatic regions is what makes compromise so difficult and therefore bills don't pass. A Congressmen in New York can't begin to comprehend what is needed in Louisiana and so forth. Thats why states rights were so important at the founding of our country. I don't know what California needs and they don't know what we need, so why should I let them dictate to me what should be done just because they have more people over there. Parliament won't work because we would never be able to form a government of mutiple parties like the British.
Another sad note is that academic standards in high school are so low, at least around here, that many students are not properly prepared for college which could result in lower college standards. "Fairness" is typically not in the best interest of the country or citizen.

A good solution would be LSUS, NSU and ULM becoming LTUS, LTUN and LTUM with Louisiana Tech University as the flagship of the Louisiana Tech System. Tech would make a decision as to whether these schools would become JC/feeder schools, along with the existing CCs, to the main campus in Ruston. ULL achieves their coveted goal of becoming UL and the flagship of the other current ULS schools.
Let's blame it all on the Baby Boomer generation. When we came along there was a greater need for four year institutions. Nicholls, LSUA and LSUNO were all two year junior colleges. The State College System (now University of Louisiana) had to expand to fill the need. Everyone in Louisiana who graduated from high school could go to college. Because of the draft a lot of guys went to just to get the student deferment. When the draft ended the boomers kept expanding the student bodies. This was not fueled by student loans but by simple population explosion. When the Boomers passed through the system they had to do something to keep enrollment up so the student loans ballooned. Also because of the ease of getting grants and loans the fees started escalating causing student loans to go up. When I went to Tech back in the late 60s the cost was about $350 per semester, including room and board. There was no tuition. Even 10 years later when I went to law school in Texas the tuition was only $4 per hour. The crisis really began about 1985. At least in Texas that's when the legislature allowed the schools to set tuition - law school tuition at UH immediately went from $4 to $35 per hour. I have no idea what it is now, but probably above $150/hour. Since the students could get grants (from the government) or loans the schools just decided to charge more and because they charged more the amount of the loans went up.
