    Shaka Smart to Texas

I hope we keep coach Mike White for his entire career. But, if he decides to go, this is the model he needs to follow. Smart is a VERY WELL known coach on the national stage. Everyone knows his brand of basketball and he has been successful in reaching and competing in the NCAA. I think he will do very well at Texas. Coach White needs to continue to build his national recognition with wins in the tourney and make sure his "brand" is out there. Then he would be able to have his pick one day in the future. He doesn't have that right now. Too many up and coming coaches jump at the first opportunity for the big dollars and really mess up their career trajectory before they are ready for the added challenges that come with the money. I think coach White is smart. Hopefully he will be with us for a while and we get to reap the benefits.

Maybe his lack of tournament experience will hold them off.

Coach White didn't jump for the SEC (Tennessee) job last year. Sounds like he's of the mindset of patiently building his brand.

    Re: Shaka Smart to Texas

Just a thought. Sometimes when a child is raised in a family that relocates many times while growing up (because of parents career) they as an adult want to "stay put" for their children as they grow up. Maybe Mike White will want to stay in Ruston during the growing up years of his children? I don't know how often Mike Whites family relocated and if he wished to have had roots in one place as a child/teen, but if so, there could be a really strong desire to stay in Ruston for a while. I suspect, since he didn't jump at the first big money (TN) offer, as so many do, he's thinking long term and realizes he's building something special at Tech that will serve him (and Tech) well in the long run. If he demonstrates stability by committing to Ruston/LaTech he will get better recruits because they are not fearful of their college coach jumping ship on them after they commit IMO... this will in turn build both his brand and the Tech brand and help him be more attractive to the much larger ACC basketball colleges. Coach White probably has a handful of program names that he would leave Tech for the opportunity to coach, and I hope it's a small list :-). I have a feeling he's really smart, disciplined, and has balance in his life and will be at Tech for a good while. I've seen on a prior thread some ideas of ways to generate more income for MW that may help him justify staying here a little longer too (financially speaking). Of course, unless Coach White, were personally writing this, this is 100% speculation because I have not spoken to him directly and do not know his heart, his goals as a family man or his goals as a coach. Whatever they are, I want the best for him and LaTech.

I would throw that Gregg Marshall money at Archie Miller. He's done a better job than Shaka I think.

    Increase recruiting money
    Increase assistance pay
    Pay coach more
    Continue effort in TAC renovation
Fix up Memorial Gym (yes we got a new floor, it could be a premium basketball practice facility)

It's all about incentives. Raise salaries for assistants and increase recruiting budget. After that, give attendance and NCAA Tourney bonuses. Something like: If you get in the Tourney, you're the highest paid coach in conference....

    Just go up from there.
