If I had to pick a top 3 for positions of concern, these would be mine:
1a. LB - just unproven. No clue what to expect here, but I'm hopeful.
1b. K - another 63% effort on FGs from our kickers won't cut it. This is college football and we're freakin' Kicker University™. There is no reason for us to be under 80%.
2. Back 7 depth
I am not sure if you are referring to thread, individual post or Kicker University --so here are my thoughts--- Chris Boniot--Josh Scobee- Matt Stover -- great NFL careers as fg kickers-- Allen as punter--- Go way back and we had David Lee with Baltimore. Think his point was fair enouigh--we need to do better in FG area -- Nothing wrong with pointing that out--with a lot of Tech Pride ....
I mean, it's not the flashiest thing to be known for, but we've graduated some damn fine kicking specialists. Just that fact alone should mean we're able to find a guy who can hit at least 75-80%. I'm not asking for anyone to knock down 55 yd kicks into the wind every time, just hit the ones from 35-40 and in with good regularity.
us old farts remember Jerry Pope--he was consistant from 50 tards. Allen won games for us by keeping opponents inside 20 and we lost a couple of close games ( OD and NSU) when we missed fgs and other team made theirs-- most casual fans know the kickers name but not the O line or D line--ULL had a great kicker named Septian who played for Cowboys til he went to jail for being a pedophile -- our guys have represented us with class...
The ? is, how many windows on the SEZ will be broken by a wild kick ?
What was our fg percentage and punt average for last season, and how did it rank nationally? This may one of those deals like when people griped about Dykes/Franklin not letting the qb's going under center in short yardage situations (because we got stuffed a few times) even though our conversion percentage was higher than the national average.
Have you considered those Dogs?
Our net punting ranked #119 in FBS last year. 33.24 yard avg after discounting for total return yards. Only 208 return yards allowed on 68 punts. Not too shabby there. Easy to get down the field pretty quickly when the ball only goes 100 feet though.
Our team FG % was 62.9% (17 for 27). Very few teams were worse. We were also one of 4 FBS teams with more than 10 FG misses. We also had 3 of a total 20 FBS extra point misses in the 2014 season.
