One high school recruit is from West Monroe. Several of the JUCO players are from north Louisiana.
It's time to close the doors to the Temple of Janus.

I got to ask this because I'm obviously missing something. We give our football coaches a hard time for bringing in to many JUCO's because it's not good for the system long term but when Goff does it it's a good thing. I keep hearing it's because he was hired to win. Which is it?

We've had some pretty good players come out of West Monroe but none since 2009.

I think you know the answers, but I'll play along...

1st of all he has said he will use jucos to build the team and has stated that he plans to phase in more high school players.

2nd Almost ALL successful programs use the juco system in baseball.

3rd - While there are some great young people in the juco football system, there is really no comparison between football and baseball juco systems.

    Re: Baseball Recruiting

There are a lot more scholarships available to football players coming out of high school. Baseball scholarships get split up into a lot of partial ships. A player may get a full ride at a Juco.

A good football player that ends up at a Juco, usually has issues other than his athletic ability.

In all honesty I didn't know the answer but I appreciate the information. Obviously, I was trying to compare the two sports and it appears that you can't do that. Per my past ties to the program, I want the program to succeed as much as any fan (if not more) and if this is the way, then I'm all for it. I do hope that it's sooner than later but I'm happy with positive small steps as long as it's towards the greater good. Thanks for the info everyone.

And I believe in baseball you can only have 25 of the 35 roster spots under some type of scholarship %?

Heard Paul Minaeri discussing this on the XM College Sports

3rd - While there are some great young people in the juco football system, there is really no comparison between football and baseball juco systems.
4th - Many of the better high school players actually prefer to go Juco to keep their options open. If they go D1 straight out of high school they are locked in through their Junior year. If they go Juco and are academically qualified out of high school, many other factors come into play. They likely get more playing time immediately. They can be drafted every year. No matter how good they were coming out of high school, they typically expand their market of potential D1 schools because of experience and exposure they receive from the time spent at JUCO.

There really is no comparison between Baseball juco's and the other sports juco's. The baseball guys are by and large academically qualified and chose the JUCO route. The basketball and football Juco's are rarely academically qualified coming out of high school and are basically forced to play there.

TCU has made it to Omaha for the second year in a row. At best, they are likely the third or fourth choice of most Texas high schoolers behind UT, A&M, and Rice. You don't have to be the first choice in your state to build a program. LSU and ULL are often going to get the pick of the litter because they have established programs, but there are plenty of other solid players in the state. It's all about developing a recruiting pipeline. Goff needs to hammer the Mississippi jucos, and marry that talent with HS players along I-20 from Monroe to Dallas.
