    Women's World Cup

Can't believe I have to be the one to start this thread...

    USA 3 Australia 1

Good solid win to open tourney play. We saw why Megan Rapinoe is the best player on the US team, and why Hope Solo is the best keeper in the world. Still, we need a healthy and sharp Dynamic Duo up top: Wamback and Morgan.

Back line was very suspect, especially in the 1st half. Played better in the 2nd half.

Sweden is up next. They are the 5th ranked team in the world (tied by Nigeria today, woe!).

I know nothing about soccer but I enjoyed watching the Cup last year and the women's game today. So I'll take your analysis as law

    Re: Women's World Cup

Columbia won against the run of play. France had 23 shots, Columbia 3, France had TOP about 67%...but, the only stat that matters is Columbia 2 France 0.

As for us, er, the US, need to find an offense. Wambach and Morgan riding the pine won't cut it. The Sweden final was not surprising, nor all that upsetting. Lil disappointed we didn't get the 3 pts, but Sweden is the 5th ranked team in the world...and Pia knows how to play us.

Just need to beat Nigeria, win the group (the Group of Death) and move on to the Round of 16.

    Re: Women's World Cup

    USA 1 Nigeria 0

US wins toughest group and advances.

That's the good news. The bad news is this team is not looking like a team on a path to win it all. Maybe Coach Ellis is playing a game of poker, and is showing a poker face. But, I doubt it. We are just not that good right now.

Wambach scored the goal tonite and played 90 mins. Morgan played 65 mins and showed flashes of the great player she is. But, no finish. Defense is carrying the team right now. But, it's only gonna get tougher and we've already seen what can happen when you don't put teams away. Ask France. The refs (all female) have sucked. More missed calls already, than in entire WCs in the past. Means teams are at the mercy of a roll of the dice not knowing when the next asinine call is going to go against you.

We are in the Sweet 16 and now it's win....or go home. Gotta raise our play to another level.

Next game is Saturday with an opponent to be determined.

I thought they played really good 'D' but looked poor on offense and when passing.

    Re: Women's World Cup

Yep. Defense, except for the 1st half vs. Australia, has been rock-solid so far in the WC. The offense, for any soccer team, starts with the midfield. And not just those designated as "midfielders," but also defenders stepping up, making runs, etc.. and strikers stepping back, i.e. going to meet the ball. It's any player who happens to be in a "midfield position" on that particular play. Well....anyway...it's been breaking down for the US on offense with the play out of the midfield. In the Australia game Megan Rapinoe was a one-player wrecking crew for us against their defense. She alone provided the much-needed midfield play and the result was 3 goals vs. a very good, and Top 10 ranked, Australia side.
