Dave Nitz will be starting his sixth year as the “Voice of the Explorers” and his 33^rd year broadcasting professional baseball. Nitz has worked in the Orioles organization at Bluefield (WV) in the Appalachian League, the Rangers Triple-A at Oklahoma City and the Giants Double-A at Shreveport in the Texas League. He has also done play-by-play work for independent league teams in Baton Rouge (LA) and Shreveport and has broadcast over 3,500 minor league baseball games during that time.
Nitz has just completed his 39^th year broadcasting football, basketball and baseball for Louisiana Tech University where he has broadcast nearly 2,500 games for the Bulldogs.

In 2009, Nitz received the honor as the Louisiana Sportscaster of the year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. In 2010, Dave was inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame which also includes such notables as Terry Bradshaw, Karl Malone, NFL placekicker Matt Stover and former major league pitcher George Stone.

Just a year ago, Nitz was awarded as top play-by-play person in Louisiana by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

Nitz should be in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame if he isn't there already.

Have loved listening to him all these years since I was at Tech. Hard to believe its 40 years since I started my junior year.

Wow! Great interview. I knew that Nitz was very close to becoming the play-by-play man for Oklahoma in the early 80s but did not know that in the 80s he also turned down Marshall, Syracuse, and Tulane.

He actually took the Tulane job but then called them back the next day to say he had a change of heart. He turned down the Syracuse job because it would mean he would not be doing baseball. He was offered the Marshall job but could never get together with them on money.

I also did not know that Dave threw batting practice almost every day for the minor league clubs for whom he worked and did it through the late 90s. He said his arm is still really good, but he has a hip that just won't allow him to do it anymore. Dave would come to the field, throw an hour of BP, then shower and get ready for the pre-game show.

Amazing stuff.
