Yes, I agree. BTW has anyone ever been called a low major or high major? So if the old AQ were high major and the non-AQ were mid major I guess that means the FCS teams were the low major. Then Div II would be high minor and Div III would be low minor but what about non NCAA members if there are any (used to be NAIA was separate)?

I have actually seen a similar classification system in print. I think it may have been the beat writer for UA_Monticello, maybe 10 years ago.

BCS/AQ/P5 = major
Non-AQ/G5 = mid-major
FCS/D1AA = low major
D2 = mid-minor
D3 & NAIA = minor

I'm not saying I subscribe to that hierarchy, but many sportswriters seem to.

I hate to tell you guys but if we weren't a mid major and we're just a "major" college basketball program, we would have been in the NCAA tourney with 27, 28, 29 wins. That alone tells you where our program is. Let someone in the big east win 27 and not get a bid and see what happens.

It sounds like you're reinforcing the point that major vs. mid-major labors are fabrications based on hype & media preference.

If you're trying to say that perception = reality in this business, we agree. We just feel our own AD bears some responsibility for reinforcing that (fabricated) perception.

You're following my point perfectly Champ. I would never use the term if I was an AD, but I felt we would go through things like this when we hired a young guy from mcneese. As long as T Mac is only using it when talking basketball I'm ok with it. Mid major is a nice term sometimes. Look at VCU, George Mason, FGCU, Murray st, Wichita st.. Teams are scared of them!

He's playing by "their" rules. His job is to present Tech in the best possible light with a focus on improving that image. Using those terms is the opposite of that, as it encourages keeping Tech "in its place."

Not much consistency in this. Several "Majors" fall into the G5s and several low majors are actually what they call "mid-majors".

Also, they use the term when talking football, MBB, and WBB. Crazy stuff!

Autonomous 5 and non A-5 is the correct terms where football is concerned...

And the gulf between the two is not shrinking as some would like you to think but, expanding -

Even the upper echelon teams in the AAC and MWC have basically no shot of escaping the chasm now

And there is a gulf beginning to grow between the top schools in the A-5 and a real fear that they may be left out within the next 10 years (K-State, Kansas, West Va, Iowa St, Vandy and others)

In the end - there will be 60 to 64 teams

Could be, but current rules must change. The Big10 is about to find out how difficult things will be without the 2 sure wins.
The A-5 guys will have to decide how much they like 2-3 loss teams going to the playoffs.

IMO, the separation will continue, but a future Boise will remain a possibility. Saying that, Champions of G5 conference have a much better chance at playoffs that the guys you listed...K-State, Kansas, West Va, Iowa St, Vandy and others

It's about all BUDGET $$$ for the program and perceptions of status

Gonzaga & Wichita St are "mid-major" programs with MAJOR $$$ dedicated

Same for Temple even though they are in the same conference as UConn who is considered a MAJOR

Then you have the reconstituted Big East which is CONSIDERED MAJOR

Then you have TECH, SFA, USL, FGCU and others who are mid-majors based on budgets and perceived level of competition

The you have ULM, NWSt, UALR etal who are "low-majors" based on budgets and perceived level of competition

They all play DI basketball and compete for the same end goal

As you can see the "x-major" labeling is idiotic

Current rules have changed - the NCAA saw to that last spring with the creation of the Autonomous 5 - really no implementation yet other than the "pay for play" but that is just the card to be played...
