DONW all those old school coaches were that way. If you said you were hurt you would get, "that is a long way from your heart" get back in the game.😄Jerry Kramer of the Green Bay Packers was favorite because our team at Byrd High School used the pulling guards scheme. Oh! what memories!

Damn, I remeber the days in the late 80s playing Houston. Bobby slaughter got crushed going over the middle, broken ribs, he jumped up and came back to the huddle. The reason he didn't leave the game is he didn't want the db to know he hurt him. It was a different game back then.

That coach sounds like my former boss. To be considered "sick" and get the day off...you had to pass the SCREEN test. If you could sh_t through a screen and leave nothing on it....then you could be considered as being sick!!

I remember that crap. On a lot of occasions our coaches --who were simply doing what most coaches were doing back then-- wouldn't let us have WATER during practice. And they made us take SALT tablets before each practice and every game. Looking back, its a wonder every one of us didn't die of high blood pressure and heat exhaustion on the field.

How could coaches and doctors have got it so wrong back then?

I guess there is some science about the salt tablets. Salt helps you retain water. That's why they want you to cut out salt if you have high blood pressure.

We were tougher back then. We drank out of the water hose and were glad to get any water.

I was watching a practice in August a few years ago when Bicknell was the coach. There was one kid on the field that started throwing up when they ran windsprints. I said to Bicknell that it looked like that kid spent too much time under the air conditioner during the summer. He said: Didn't you spend time under the air conditioner during the summer. I said we didn't have air conditioners when I was a kid. He looked back at me and said, How could you survive this heat without an air conditioner?

The type of coach a player would run through a brick wall for..
