According to his family he had been feeling badly the past few days. I think he battled health challenges, but I don't get the impression it was anything considered life threatening.

I wonder why the press isn't reporting the reasons why.

Saunders did call a few Tech games in his time as a play-by-play man, including the NCAA women's basketball regional in Ruston for ESPN in 1989.

I don't think they'll know until autopsy results are known. The blood work takes weeks to come back.

Probably because they don't know. It takes time to do an autopsy and get a definitive cause of death, assuming the family even wants that. There doesn't have to be an autopsy if there's no concern for foul play. I hate to speculate, but he went to sleep and didn't wake up. May have been cardiac arrest.

He was also a mental health advocate:

Saunders recently co-wrote a book with John U. Bacon, Playing Hurt: My Journey from Despair to Hope, about his battles with depression. It is set for release in April 2017.

According to the description of the book, Saunders “confesses his constant battle with depression and how it nearly cost him his life.” The book, “welcomes readers into the heart of his desperate struggle against depression: from insights into the illness’s root causes to the nature of modern treatments, from both a medical and cultural perspective. His story unfolds as so many of our lives do – among family, friends and colleagues – but it also peers into places we don’t often discuss openly – psych wards and hospitals. Here is the honest story of a public figure facing his own mental illness head on, and emerging far better for his effort.”

Whatever caused his earthly journey to end, prayers for comfort and strength to his family and friends.
