The money is being raised from private sources by those of us who love Tech baseball. Every dime will be from individual Tech baseball fans.

I wonder if it will be as nice as the new football surface, I was shocked how soft it was when I walked on it after the Southern game...

Would somebody explain how artificial turf helps with recruiting? It seems like almost all of the top baseball venues in the country have real grass and also excel in recruiting. It seems like playing on grass would be the much better recruiting tool.

The baseball players no longer have to be the daily grounds crew.

Those schools have qualified grounds crews who maintain the field...it makes total sense now. No more grass cutting from coaches and working on field means more reps in practice and more efficient practice times...

There isn't anyone else that could step up to the plate and do this?

ULL's baseball field is all turf, including the infield "dirt." (The mound is and will have to be actual dirt. I don't there is a feasible way to have a turf mound and not drastically change pitching.) My son played a high school game on it this year. He says it is more difficult to slide on artificial turf than on dirt, and it hurts, it's like trying to slide on concrete. The turf causes more friction. In the outfield, he says the ball does not die. If a ball is hit to the outfield and you misplay it, it will roll to the fence. He also says the ball has more hop and bounces more like its bouncing on concrete, so a ball that bounces in front of you that you can normally play off the bounce will bounce over your head.

I know the previous coaching staff did not want the Tech maintenance staff working on it, they has messed up a few times, so the coaches wanted to do it themselves so it would be done how they wanted it...

So, maybe these boosters could have donated their money to a grounds crew year after year...? Is that what you mean?

Last season was a good example of rain and how it affects our season down here...the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I'm sure everyone involved out hours and hours of research into it. It seems like a no brainer from the maintenance view. Sounds like a great idea...

Lafayette has "astro turf" from like 20 years ago.

It's ProGrass Synthetic turf, and it's newer than the turf at Joe Aillet. They installed it 4 or 5 years ago, IIRC. It's the same stuff that's on their football field.
