W. Basketball. LA Tech Pulls Away from SFA in 76-44 Win

As the teams had gotten into position for the opening jump one ref stopped things and at least two Techsters had to remove leg items. One had a knee pad looking item on each knee, the other something that looked like compression sleeve from lower thigh to below the knee. Others on both teams were wearing brace looking devices and were not asked to remove them. No explanation was provided.

There are a bunch of stupid uniform rules which are enforced to varying degrees based on who the officials are. In this case, one player was wearing black knee pads/compression sleeve and other team members had on white. A team has to wear the same color, so the player wearing black removed hers. In the case of the knee pads that Santos removed, they were white but had a thin black stripe on them and the official decided it violated the uniform rules and asked her to remove them.

"Louisiana Tech University Athletics has partnered with adidas America, Inc. to establish a 5-year exclusive agreement that will outfit Louisiana Tech's 16 NCAA men's and women's programs in adidas uniforms, apparel, footwear and equipment through the 2020-2021 athletics season. Effective July 1, 2016 adidas will serve as the exclusive supplier for Louisiana Tech athletics uniforms, apparel, shoes and other footwear, and athletic accessories for all Bulldog and Lady Techster teams, with the exception of the Lady Techster basketball program, which will join the adidas partnership in 2017."

[grist for the rumor mill...] Maybe (and by "maybe" I mean "doubtfully") the refs have a shoes & stripes contract with UnderArmor. UA was PO'd they lost the contract, so they withheld matching accessories and cued the whistles to commit an act of solidarity.

I actually wondered this because Rochelle came into the game later, wearing (white) UA kneepads.

The color thing makes sense but I've never seen it enforced.

Maybe it's an early season point-of-emphais. I'm sure the NCAA wants to present the best possible product, and one of the marketing points of the girls' game is their clean, solid citizen student athlete reputation. (Once they get into the WNBA and try their hands at domestic life, though, it can be Katy bar the door!)

I'm sure ADs also want uniform compliance because once those games are on TV, I'd imagine teams could find themselves in breach of contract if they haven't accessorized in accordance with their sponsoring label, as well as the NCAA.

It's a shame that it currently seems politically correct for the men to be more fashion conscious about their uniforms. The women could have a lot of fun with their uni's if they were allowed to be both strong and feminine.
