    LaTech Our Punter, Gerald Shouse

Gerald Shouse's 68 Yard punt at UTEP last week put him in the record books at Number 8 on the Louisiana Tech "Longest Punts" list. His current average to-date appears to rank him at Number 2 (just behind Ryan Allen) on the Louisiana Tech "Top Career Punters" list. And he doesn't even have a scholarship. That's a nice ROI.

Our kicker and punter both responded to being called out last year and have done a nice job this year. Good job fellas!

I just looked at Shouse's stats and his (inside the 20) stat is at 50%, 22 of 44 punts. That's #1 in CUSA. He's only had 2 touchbacks in 44 punts.

He's gotten MUCH more consistent this year. I could see he knew how to boom a ball last year, but he couldn't do it more than once in a row seemed like. Glad to see him keep working and have a really good season, along with JB, who has been perfect on XPs and inside 30 yds on FGs.

I'm glad they are both back next season. Shouse will be a senior I believe, so he should be even better after a year of confidence and good punting. Barnes will only be a junior next year. Good for us hopefully.

I was thinking about how their coach called time out with one second so we had to punt into wind of third quarter. That time out might have been the difference at end of game. Obviously no way to tell how fourth quarter would have played out but that time out ......

Yep, glad UTEP's coach burned that time out!

Shouse did not punt last year but a few times. I have no idea why after his performance this year. We used McPherson and the rugby for some ungodly reason almost all year.

One reason could be that Coach Holtz had given McPherson a scholarship as a true Freshman. That was one of his first orders of business, and if I recall correctly McPherson was intended to kick as well. And he did kick off (out of bounds) at NC State as a true freshman as Barns was redshirted. It just seems that possibly Coach Holtz had a hard time letting go of the hope of McPherson working out as planned.

Whatever the case, thank goodness our punting has improved! I don't dread seeing Shouse trot onto the field.

Agreed! If they were efficient last year as they have been this year, we would have beat Marshal in the conference championship game.
