The students are not lame. They are no different than any other group we try to get to games. Just being at Tech =/= being a Tech fan.
I have been attending LA Tech sporting events since 1978 (that goes back to high school for me). We have ALWAYS (I can't stress that word enough) had dismal attendance at football games after Thanksgiving. School is out, people are at relatives' houses, hunting season,... As Bluecrew said in the postgame show- LA Tech football is not "our" collective priority at Thanksgiving.
To combat this known, historical FACT we need to:
1. Market the game like hell. Not just send a few tweets and then close up the school and head off for the holidays until school resumes. We need to budget for radio ads, ticket giveaways, discount packages,...
2. Create BIG incentives for students at the final home football game. We do this for the low-hanging fruit games (home opener, second home game) and then we totally write off the hardest game of the season to sell! Poor effort = poor result
3. Fight like hell to have our furthest away conference opponent be our final home game (i.e. one of the F_Us or UTEP). Willingly agreeing to host our toughest, closest opponent as our final home game is dumb and a home loss can TOTALLY change our bowl seeding. Poor effort = poor result
4. Open the dorms wide open for the students (even if only for 48 hours) so they have a place to stay. Don't just ASSume that they will find a friends' apartment to hang at.
I'm sure we can list about two pages of ideas, but these four things would greatly improve awareness, interest, and chances of winning. Its a good place to start. Keep doing what we're doing today and we will keep getting the same predictable results.
Maybe someone else has insight on this but the Hoop Troop is EXTREMELY well suited to the basketball atmosphere. Sure, there are bigger bands, but the HT acts like a basketball band should act. One problem I see is they act the same way at a football game, which is a totally different environment.
Uh oh. This just turned into a band thread.
Quick, go get an ICEE. What flavor is it? Change the subject.
I thought Little Caesar's since the boxes are orange.
Don't tell me I'm getting color blind, too.
