Would he have improved in 2013 had he stayed at Tech? I doubt it, but I believe he'd have gotten 6 wins with our sked.
I think Dykes would have still kept us winning if he had returned for a 4th season. Say what you will, but he was good at finding players that nobody else could find. Whether it be Juco's, transfers, or just overlooked high school players seeking an opportunity. His style is different than Skip Holtz's. Just because Holtz failed in 2013 doesn't mean Dykes would have.

If he was the hottest he would have been hired already because he has had his agent job hunting all year.

Re: Another 3 and Out for Dykes?

Why would any school hire Dykes? he has an overall losing record and he uses every job as a mere stepping stone. To actively seek jobs at THREE! other schools while currently employed.....wow! If Cal had any sense they would NOT negotiate anything with this loser. If anything, wait until all the "best" jobs are filled and sonny boy has nowhere to go, and then tell him, "we'll do a contract extension...with a 50% reduction in base salary."

Three schools, including Virginia, not exactly a football powerhouse, passed on Dykes. No thanks, loser. That should tell Cal, and all others, everything they need to know.

Re: Another 3 and Out for Dykes?

I don't think some of you guys understand how this works. Dykes --and his sidekick Tony Franklin-- operate by a business model that's similar to what you see in the corporate world quite often. And it works.

Dykes is a Scavenger.....or a "first responder". He's not a "piece of shit" or "a jerk" as some of you less than brilliant people have stated. He is good at finding above average players --who've mostly been overlooked for one reason or another-- and plugging them into his offensive system/scheme to reach vastly improved results rather quickly. He's not a championship coach, even though he got lucky and won a 2011 WAC title with us.

IMO, Dykes will never be a championship coach like Nick Saban --a guy who can go win a title, defend it, and remain in the title chase discussion year in and year out. It's not in his DNA. And unless he changes his MO, Dykes will never be a long time beloved figure --like Les Miles-- who consistently wins 10 games a year at one univeristy. Again, that's NOT what Dykes does. It's not even what he wants.

Dykes' specialty is going into disastrous environments (e.g., CAL) and cleaning things up quickly. Dykes is a turnaround artist. He is really good at taking programs that are beaten down, turning them around and making them competitive again in a reasonable 3-yr time frame. For better or worse, his work is now done at CAL. Just in the last 3 years he has taken CAL from 1-11 to 7-5, and possibly an 8-5 finish. That's about as good as it gets for him. So, Dykes' job is now completed. It's time to move on. He doesn't know how to take a program from 8 or 9 wins to consistently produce 10 or 11 wins. That's why he's looking to move on. And he'll be a really good hire for some school out there that needs an infusion of energy and excitement in their dormant program.

Believe it or not, CAL wants to keep Dykes, and they are trying to sign him to a long term deal. But again, that's not what Dykes wants to do. He's looking for another refresh opportunity because that's where he thrives.

    ^^^ I agree with Michael's post.

Another thing he does is towards the last year(s) of his contract is to make it appear that he is looking elsewhere and promoting that there is interest for him elsewhere. A classic ploy in an attempt to get his employer to up his $$$.

Except that HD is basing his "opinion" on one gig at Cal.. In my "opinion" his time at Tech does not resemble what he has done at Cal. Therefore he is basing his "opinion" on one sampling (Cal). No reason to think he can do the three year plan anywhere else.

    HD, wrong again...

HD, you, being the corporate tycoon that you are, know that two points (Tech, then Cal) do not make a trend. He is not a "turnaround artist", he is a wannabe that gets out of Dodge the first sign of trouble. His all-world QB is leaving and it is probable that Cal will drop below .500 again.

As usual, MD is WRONG again. (I know, nobody's really shocked. )

In addition to the "CAL gig", Sonny has done this his entire career. Below is Sonny Dykes' record as OC at Arizona from 2007 thru 2009, and as head coach at LA Tech from 2010 thru 2012. It's the same MO. He takes a job when a program is down, and gets just good enough --8 or 9 wins-- to get the next job. Then he moves on. He never even tries to stay long enough to get to 10 or 11 wins.

    Arizona Wildcats:

    2007 - 5-7, 4-5 (PAC 10)
    2008 - 8-5, 5-4 (PAC 10)
    2009 - 8-5, 6-3 (PAC 10)

When Dykes took over as head coach at LA Tech, we were 4-8 overall, 3-5 in the WAC. After that, Dykes went:

    Louisiana Tech:

    2010 - 5-7, 4-4 (WAC)
    2011 - 8-4, 6-1 (WAC Champion)
    2012 - 9-3, 4-2 (WAC

    California:

    2013 - 1-11, 0-9 (PAC 12)
    2104 - 5-7, 3-6 (PAC 12)
    2105 - 7-5, 4-5 (PAC 12)

So, there you have it. In language that even MD can understand.
