    Saints should trade Brees

Provided they could find any takers.

The perfect fit would be a contending team with the pieces in place to make a Super Bowl run, but who need a championship caliber QB. And! who can afford the $30 million for the 2016 season alone.

Brees has two good seasons left....probably. This recent foot injury is not career-threatening, but is a preview of coming attractions. It is over in New Orleans for the next few years. Even if Payton stays, and that is no guarantee, it will take several strong drafts to rebuild the team into a contender, and Brees' ridiculous salary and his age don't fit that formula. There is no reason for Brees to waste the next 2-3 seasons, his last in football, in a rebuilding scenario. And the Saints need the salary cap room to afford enough good players.

Now, the question is, which franchise would be the best fit for Brees?

The trade deadline was at the beginning of November, right? That aside, I would agree a team ready to make a playoff run but without a star QB would be most interested -- even if it is for next year. The Texans spring to mind, Fitzpatrick is a UFA in the offseason for the Jets, and perhaps the Redskins or Vikings (I'm not sold on Bridgewater) to a lesser extent.

Brees won't be on this team next year. The writing is on the wall. I really wish like hell we would have found a way to get Marriota. Rumors are also out there that Sean Payton is keen on RGIII and could sign him if he is still in NOLA next season.

RGIII is a bust. Payton has really lost it. He used to find diamonds in the rough, now he signs lumps of coal.

While I agree with you to an extent. I also realize that once Payton and Brees are gone, its going to be a long hard road back to glory days. They don't make QB's like Brees anymore. The NFL is so deficient at the position, that a lot of mediocre talents are starting all 16 games. Think about Cleveland, St. Louis,Tennessee or Jacksonville. All have drafted can't miss OL who are wasting away because these same teams keep drafting bad QBs. It is my hope that Garrett Grayson pans out because climbing out of the depths or NFL no man's land takes forever.

I was a little surprised when they didn't trade home before the season and get the most value out of him. I really didn't expect him in NO this year. When it didn't happened, I immediately expected that this would be his and Payton's last year, together. And we won't get as much if anything for Brees.

Houston needs a QB and we could use some of their defensive star/starters and OL and WR and draft pics.

I'd be shocked if anyone would give more than a mid round pick for Brees. As D80 said, he doesn't have long left. Even a Houston isn't likely to give away much for a rental

    Then don't trade him.

    Re: Saints should trade Brees

Obviously, re: a trade, it's in the Saints' best interest to unload Brees. So, the other team is not going to do it just to do the Saints a favor. Unless you're the Patriots......opportunities to reach a Super Bowl, let alone WIN one, don't come around often. If you're a Houston, or some team like that, who has the pieces in place, sans a championship caliber QB, you would be foolish to not at least talk to the Saints.

Brees could make the difference for teams who are close, but who lack that key component, THE QB!! Otherwise, what happens.... well, you start losing players to attrition, injuries, free-agency, and then if you do find a great QB, maybe you're overall team is not as strong. Nope! any team that can realistically make a run to the SB, should jump thru hoops to get Brees. Might be 10-15 years before that franchise is again in this position. (unless you're the Patriots....where such axioms never apply)

    Re: Saints should trade Brees

Today was typical of the Payton-Brees Saints. Helped that the Jags are losers...

So, Brees sets a few more franchise and NFL records, 100+ if you're keeping track, and the Aints defense also set a couple of records, such as the most TD passes allowed in a season, 42 (and counting). The old record was 40 allowed, by the Broncos.

In 2009, the Super Bowl year, the Saints' D was ranked about 12th in total defense, but led the league in take-aways, and about 6 of 'em were game-changers. Since then, the highest ranked D was 23rd, a couple of years ago when they went 11-5, beat Philly in the playoffs, then lost a close one at Seattle. Usually the Saints have been ranked dead last or next to last in total D, year after year.

So, boys & girls, what's the lesson here? Well, what good does a record-setting QB do for a team, w/o a decent defense.....? Anyone? Buellar? Buellar?

Unless you think I'm picking on Payton-Brees, then digest this:

In 1978 and 1979 the Saints had the #1 offense, led by another pretty good QB, Archie Manning. Saints set records, and put 6 players on the offensive team in the Pro Bowl both years. Yet....the Saints went 7-9 and 8-8 and missed the playoffs both years.

    Defense anyone?

What can you do when you have the best, or one of the best defenses?

    Re: Saints should trade Brees

I really don't think you realize how thin the QB position is in the NFL right now. I personally am a defensive minded guy and wish like hell the Dome Patrol roamed NOLA again, but having Drew Brees here has taken the Aints from relocation speculation to top tier home team talk in 10 years. He is the best thing to ever happen to the franchise...PERIOD. I would love to see him stay a couple more. IF he is gone next season, then oh well. But if he stays, takes a pay cut that allows us to bring in some decent then Hallelujah!!

P.S. You can't blame Drew Brees for the meteoric bust that are Jarius Byrd and Boo Boo Browner.

Nope, I don't blame Greed for the busts that are Byrd and Browner. Separate issue.

Yes, I do realize how thin QBing is in the NFL, which is why some team who is otherwise close, might just agree to a Hershel Walker-Vikings type trade!
