Re: Sources: Conference USA will see vastly reduced TV revenue next season

    from article
League TV revenue is likely to fall by about half when new contracts with Fox Sports and the CBS Sports Network take effect on July 1, according to sources at three schools familiar with C-USA’s TV contract negotiations.
    ....

The loss of an additional $500,000 in TV money would be a financial blow to ODU, which spent $41 million on athletics in 2013-2014, the last year for which audited figures are available. ODU has the largest budget in the conference. But it would be even more challenging for C-USA schools with far smaller budgets, such as Louisiana Tech ($19.3 million) or Southern Mississippi ($23.5 million).

    ....

Conference USA is also negotiating with the American Sports Network, which produced and televised more than 100 C-USA sports events the last two seasons. ASN did not pay C-USA any rights fees, but has become the primary TV outlet for ODU.

Appears we may fall below the MAC

AAC - $2 million per school
MWC - $1.7 million per school
    MAC: $670K per school
    CUSA: $500K per school ?
    Sun Belt: $100K per school

Conference USA below the MAC makes no sense. Unless it's a matter of timing, which doesn't bode well for any of the G5.

The big market strategy didn't work, I guess... unless all G5's are going to get hammered due to ESPN's troubles / viewers choosing streaming over cable.

Hopefully ASN will set up some streaming opportunities for C-USA in the future. If not, the Sun Belt option of $100K per school, but all games streamed on ESPN3 might be a better option.

You misread the article. It said they expect it to drop by $500K, not to $500K. That would put C-USA at $670K per school, which is exactly equal to the MAC.

The CBS deal expires this year, which granted them internet streaming rights. I don't think we'll have that issue going forward.

Didn't the article also say that some additional revenue could potentially come from ASN as well?

I'll take D- All of the above regarding your first statement. But I do think we'll see better streaming opportunities coming up. That mode of entertainment delivery has grown exponentially since the last deal was finalized.

That got me thinking (uh oh). How much could Tech generate by selling ads to local businesses and producing their own streaming of the game to subscribers who pay about $20 a game or $100 a season? Is this a dumb idea? The only thing we would lose out on is the talking heads from the networks discussing the game. Plus we could recapture the revenue of those who choose to sit home and watch on TV rather than buying a ticket and coming to the stadium. Could we get anywhere close to $670K a year? Is that what the Longhorn Network is?

If every school in the nation did that it would revolutionize the industry. LSU would earn what they could earn and Vanderbilt would earn what they could earn. No more enrichment by association. Nebraska could earn what they could earn and Kansas could earn what they could earn. Conferences would be a thing of the past.

A great idea in theory, but let's remember we have one of the most horrendous marketing departments in the nation so we would struggle to promote our brand.

That essentially what we have now except that Tech doesn't get the subscription money from CBS/C-USA. You are talking third tier rights so you wouldn't have any good inventory to work with. All of our football games are televised so we wouldn't have the rights to any football games. You'd only have the MBB home games that weren't televised (Millsaps, UT-Arlington, NC Central, Jackson State, LSUS, Southern, Prairie View, Southern Miss, Charlotte, UTSA, North Texas, & Rice). Then you'd pretty much have your pick of WBB and baseball home games, but what are those sports worth?

No, I'm talking about Tech (and every school) taking full rights of their broadcasts/streaming. All individualized streaming to their market. No traditional national broadcasting (as that seems to be dying off). ESPN would be back to just reporting on what happened in the game (the highlights after it's over), not profiting off the universities. There are negatives... it would be impossible to elevate your brand and you wouldn't be able to watch schools you can't afford to watch (or don't want to pay to watch... like a #1 vs a #2 that sounds intriguing in Week 10, for example). But you could buy it if you wanted to. I bet LSU would / could charge $200 a game where Tech would just charge $20 a game.

No worries.. Once I win the Powerball jackpot tomorrow night, the 500K loss in TV revenue will not even be missed.
