This is an on-going argument, especially now in these trying times of budget woes. Athletics is a sacred cow in the archaic university industry, and anyone who dares suggest something be done...like that poor sap who was chancellor at UNO...gets tarred and feathered. But, if schools would just take some easy, practical steps, they can reduce athletic budgets without doing any damage to their programs and inviting the ire of a few dozen alums.
Now, admittedly, these measures would result in meager savings, amounting to about $200-500K in cuts for most Louisiana universities. But! at least the defenders of athletics can say they have made some cuts. Which might be enough to keep some of the wolves away from the door. And, that kind of savings can save a few faculty positions, which tends to placate the academic types.
The first threat of cuts was not enough to get the Republican's attention (or devotion) in BR. Edwards is now threatening to cut even more. It must have been worse than he thought after he realized it was worse than he thougth.
Where were these cowardly Republicans during the election when they needed to be telling everybody what Edwards would do?
was told this weekend by someone that had attended some "meetings" that to make up for cuts coming its being considered that lsu students may be assessed a mid-semester fee of around $700 per student. guy has some serious inside tracks as he was a large media figure in shrev for a while.
Many scare tactics going around to sway the cowardly republicans into voting for more taxes.
No cuts to government other than ed and hospitals. It's always the SOS with these shameless cowardly bastards.
Thanks to all the amendments we've made to our 1974 state constitution, virtually everything is protected and "hands-off" except higher Ed and healthcare.
As I would be the one of the LAST people to defend a Democrat, the fact is, neither Mr. Edwards NOR Mr. Jindal have/had much wiggle room to cut anything when the oil prices went south. We had a smidgen of hope with the stimulus money, and Hurricane relief, but that's all gone now. If you aren't allowed by law to reduce expenses, the only other option is to do the unpopular and that's raise revenues...and it isn't coming from oil and gas right now. Simply said, Louisiana finds itself in a major pickle...again.
We need to scrap the 74 constitution and start completely over.
Jindal actually raised government expenses. Edwards is proposing to do the same.
Those increases from both Jinal and Edwards are almost exactly the same as the cuts they declare had to be made both past and present.
Edwards is fulfilling campaign promises on the back of higher ed and healthcare.
Even in best case, Nicholls to close temporarily
thenewstar.com
(Norby) Chabert was furious when he learned from Gannett Louisiana Newspapers of the plan for Nicholls State, which is located in Thibodaux, to close for 12 days.
"This is the first I've heard of it and I think it's unnecessary and a bad call," Chabert said. "Are you telling me that the university in the fifth largest market in Louisiana that serves 6,300 students is going to close? This isn't going to happen."
6,300 students... need a new home.
