Pathetic...but a win is a win. US wins group and qualifies for the World Cup finals.

    CONCACAF semi-finals:

    US vs. Costa Rica
    Canada vs. Jamaica

USWNT has not lost a CONCACAF match in 12 years. There have been 11 women's CONCACAF championships and it now stands:

    USA 9 titles
    Canada 2 titles
    Everyone else 0 titles

USW U20 team ousted from the World Cup in pool play for the second straight time. Beat Ghana then got completely out-classed, OUT-COACHED! by The Netherlands and Japan. Need to fire that fat coach. Why the hell would any soccer team, especially a national team, have a fat coach!??? And she is obviously clueless too.

Like in baseball when you can point to the three keys to winning:
    1. Pitching 2. Pitching 3. Pitching

    In soccer it is:
    1. Midfield 2. Midfield 3. Midfield

The USW U20 got played, bad! in both losses in the midfield. The Dutch and Japs dominated the midfield.

Looking at the near-future of the USWNT I see the same problem. Little wonder, since the newbies the US will be counting on played on the ONLY other U20 team to get bounced in group play in the World Cup. Why is this so hard? We have the athletes, we have the means to develop players, the US Soccer Federation, especially on the women's side, outspends all other nations. Yet...we have no young midfielders worth a damn. Then, beyond the lack of player development, is the coaching woes. The fat W U20 coach is clueless! hapless! Devoid of basic soccer knowledge. Must have been some kind of political appointment...

I don't think the USWNT will win a third straight WC title. That's nearly impossible at this level for one program to continue to be so dominant. If I had to pick one side to be the favorite to win in 2023 it's England. But, there are other countries capable as well. Clearly 2023 will be the last hoorah for USWNT. We'll be a contender, will be a tough out. But the veterans who are carrying the team will all be gone for WC 2027 and these youngsters coming up have no idea what world-class futbol is supposed to look like.

Josh Sargent? So, he scores three goals this week for his club Norwich City and suddenly he's going to be our savior for the USMNT's striker woes? He has never impressed me as having the quality to be our go-to guy up top. He is only 22, so very young and yes, has an opportunity to gel. But... and besides the US has midfield issues and a striker, even a legit good one, will get left stranded on an island without a quality midfield to feed him the ball and to work with.

The coaching was abysmal. Why start the "A" team against Ghana and then make numerous changes for The Netherlands? Made no sense at all. I watched that match but didn't bother with the Japan match because I knew how that one was going to turn out.

Re: Back to the important stuff....

USWNT concluded a two-game series with Nigeria. Results were 4-0 and 2-1 for the US. Last night's game revealed the weakness of the current lineup and why MIDFIELD play is the key to winning at the elite, international level.

The aged-one, Megan Rapinoe came in in the 60th minute and made an immediate impact on the play of our midfield. Match was tied 1-1 and while the US had enjoyed the "run of play" albeit not in a dominating manner, the game was still very much up for grabs. Our midfield play had been just adequate to keep a good, but not great, Nigerian side at bay. Their goal came after a mistake made in the midfield and then a quick counter when a very good striker placed a perfect shot in the upper 90 beating our keeper. This is what can, and will happen, if you open the door even slightly at the international level. And, worse, at that point our goal, in the 1-1 match, was an own-goal mistake made by Nigeria. It is true we kept a lot of pressure on them, just couldn't finish.

Then Rapinoe enters the whole complexion of the match changed. Nigeria could not muster any kind of consistency on offense, losing possession in the midfield, and then Rapinoe hit Lavelle with a perfect pass for the game-winner.

Nigeria is in the World Cup Finals, but qualified as only the 4th place African side. They are the kind of team the US will see in pool play for sure, good, decent sides, though not particularly great. We sorely miss our frontline players like Ertz, Press, Dunn, and Heath all of whom I hope are healthy and ready for the WC Finals. Davis is also nursing an injury, a solid defender.

Bakery chefs. US defenders today looked like that should be their profession because they were excellent at making turnover after turnover on an assembly line in their defensive third. Especially the central defense.

The 2-0 score flattered the US as it could easily have been 4 or 5 without Matt Turner in goal. Turner was the US standout player, and no one else was even close.

Berkhalter deserves credit for trying to change things at halftime, but he deserves no credit for making some of the original lineup decisions. Hope he learned what he needed to today and doesn't do most of those things again.

Performances like this one will not come close to getting any results in Qatar. The Saudi Arabia match next week now becomes a huge dress rehearsal.

We have nothing. Just HOPE we can advance out of group play, just so we can get embarrassed in the Round of 16. More likely this will be a repeat of 2006 when we finished dead last in the field of 32.

    US 0 Saudia Arabia 0

To say it was uninspiring is to say the sun is hot....Duh!

Two shots on goal, only 43% possession time, wow! ugh! Only bright spot was GK Matt Turner. Yet goofy Berhalter said again Stephan is his #1 keeper. Of course, Stephan is hurt and has played exactly one match in the past 6 months for club & country. If Turner doesn't start the Wales match then Berhalter should be terminated immediately, on the spot. Speaking of Wales, their coach was present for that sleeper last night. He's already chalking up a result vs. the US. One point is in the bag, and he is just one goal away from garnering 3 points.

Reyna left in the 30th minute with a leg injury. That guy will never see significant playing time for the US. Not in the cards.

    USWNT 1 England 2

Actually surprised we kept it close. This friendly was all about England, playing in front of 76,000+ fans and the match meant SO MUCH more to them than it did to us.

I'd call that result a 2-2 draw. VAR decision that came 2 minutes and 15 seconds after the ball was in the back of the net nullified the second US equalizer. If it takes longer than 90 seconds for VAR to decide if a goal should count, then it should count since it can't be considered a clear and obvious error.
