On to the Olympics! Will play Canada on Sunday for the CONCACAF title, but both are already qualified for the Olympics.

In March the men's team will try to qualify for the Olympics as well. Ah, good luck.

USWNT opens the SheBelieves Cup tonite vs. England. Gonna be a very tough match. Last time we played in this prestigious tourney we got embarrassed and Australia came from nowhere to win it.

And look at the string of clean slates vs. some of the top ranked teams in the world. Shutout after shutout.

Lot of that is thanks to one of the most UNSUNG heroes in the history of women's soccer, and heck, just soccer in general: Becky Sauerbrunn. Now at 34 she continues to dominate in the middle of our defense. Match after match she is the anchor of a solid defense that silences other potent offenses. Her perfomance in the 2015 World Cup Finals in Canada has been cast as "perfection." Experts have studied the game tapes and proclaim she never made even one mistake, 100% perfection. She was nearly so in France in 2019, but made two mistakes on bad passes out of the back. Given she played every minute of all 7 matches...two mistakes is pretty damn close to "perfection."

Defense wins championships and that is very true at the highest levels of competitive sports.

Had to call my 10yo back into the room to watch the replay on that. (She plays keeper.)

We must've watched it on slo-mo 10 times. Just lovely ...

    US 3 Japan 1

Wins SheBelieves Cup. Dispatched the 6th, 10th, and 13th ranked sides in the world.

Japan played a good match. As they usually do they controlled the ball and TOP. Possession, possession, possession...Japan is frustrating to play.

A potential silver lining in this C-19 mess! FIFA is strongly considering moving the 2022 Men's World Cup Finals to North America (US, Canada, and dem other guys down there) which was slated for 2026. Then, hopefully, it will repeat and stay here for 2026 too.

    https://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/st...al-pay-lawsuit

Friday's ruling cited as undisputed fact that from 2015 to 2019, the women's national team averaged $220,747 per game in total payments (for a total of $24.5 million), while the men's national team averaged $212,639 per game in total payments (for a total of $18.5 million).

.......Klausner effectively concluded that differences in payment structure were the result of choices made by the women's players and their union -- including guaranteed annual salaries of at least $100,000 for 20 contracted players -- and not discrimination by the federation.

Yep, and also keep in mind that worldwide men's soccer generates $billions more in revenue than does women's soccer. Not too different than men's and women's NCAA hoops. Player pay is derived from different pools of money in FIFA. And as Judy Foudy says the WNT chose a different pay structure one that guarantees salaries even if a player is injured and cannot play ever again for the national team, etc...the men's team doesn't have any of that.

The judge has allowed that portion of the lawsuit to continue re: team facilities, medical staffs and trainers, and other such support roles.

Creepy Joe Biden chimed in saying he wishes to molest the players to show solidarity with them...

Re: Back to the important stuff....

I have been watching lots of horse racing...live racing from across the country. Charlatan and Nadal are the top two 3-yr-olds this year.

And, I have watched some replays of classic football games. Not sure why our game vs. LSU in 2003 qualfied for such a tag, but CST replayed it recently. And, have watched the replays of US Soccer matches. Just watched the 1999 World Cup Final US vs. China and the 2011 US vs. Brazil quarterfinal. Women's international soccer has come a long way since 1999. While there were some very good players, the quality of the soccer was lacking back then. That 1999 Final lacked ball control and possession. There was practically none, not even by the Chicoms. It was kickball. I had forgotten how weak the quaility of soccer was back then in the women's game. Not so today. The quality is there. The 1999 USWNT would be bounced early from a WC Final these days. Again, not because they lacked athletes or talent, but because of the lousy style of play.

For those of you non-soccer types...think of it this way. Imagine a basketball team of good players but who lacked team play. A player gets a defensive rebound and keeps the ball, going down and launching a 3, ignoring open teammates. Or at best, there is minimal passing, but mostly selfish ballhogging. No matter how much talent that "team" might have, they are doomed to losing in a playoff setting vs. a team that actually played real basketball. That's overstating the 1999 WNT's style some. They did pass the ball...at times. But there is a marked difference in "possession."

And I have been watching too much "classic" sports on TV....
