Only problem is that it was replaced by sexism, age-ism, and any other “ism” you can imagine.

Glad to see this. It did cause a rift in the team as Rapinoe remains an ardent lefty-leaning activist while others like Carli Lloyd have remained rooted in traditional patriotism. They did all set aside their political differences when it came time to focus on playing. The USWNT visited Normandy when in France for the 2019 World Cup. It made a visible impact on all of them, including Rapinoe, but the most out-spoken was Lloyd who embraced a US veteran, now 90+ years old, who stormed the beaches of Normandy. Lloyd said "what we do is play a game, they are the real heroes."

Don't want this thread to get bogged down in politics, but it is obvious now that the commies have one of their own in the WH they don't see the need to stir up problems elsewhere. Soros has cut off funding...for now...of BLM/Antifa so we will see less riots and destruction from them. The Left wants to project an image of calm and "goodness" now, so national anthem protests are out of bounds.

    Back to the important stuff...

Greatness. In sports we, all of us, are fascinated, GRASPED! by greatness. You may not be familiar with the story of Phar Lap. He was an Australian-bred race horse, back in the 1930's, who exploded onto the international scene. The horse was "murdered" by the Mafia while in Mexico, poisoned, because they couldn't beat him on the track. The breeder of Phar Lap was interviewed by a newspaper sports' writer who said, "What do you make of all this fuss about Phar Lap's death? After all, he was JUST a horse." The man fumed, "He was NOT just a horse! He was the best!"

Is Michael Jordan JUST another basketball player? What about Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and others...just more baseball players?

Well, you may not be a soccer fan, and some here hate women's sports in general, ahem. But, the truth is the USWNT has achieved a status of being the absolute best ever, and is adding to their legacy as one of the most successful, dominating teams, in any sport, of all time! I can't think of any team, men's or women's, in any sport that has dominated like this. Since FIFA sanctioned women's soccer there have been 8 World Cups. The US has won 4 titles and has reached the Final Four all eight times.

Can this women's soccer team beat men's teams? NOPE! But then they don't have to. Many of us can watch the Olympics and cheer for the USA's women's track & field stars and be just as thrilled for them as we are for the men. US Men's Team playing in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament. Beat Costa Rica 1-0 thanks mostly to our GK, with 9 saves and some stellar plays. All players have to be under 24 years old...and we looked like a young bunch out there. Next up, the Dominican Republic on Sunday, and then Mexico on Wednesday.

Re: Back to the important stuff....

    US 0 Mexico 1

Costly, stupid turnover leads to cheap goal. This insistence in playing from the back has made the US too predictable and easy to defend. Then when you have teams, like Mexico, who like to apply high pressure it leads to give-aways in front of your goal. Bam! and the opposition says, thankyaverymuch.

I understand what US Soccer, the association (the leadership) is trying to accomplish. But they are forcing the matter and not being flexible in matches. They can be regimented in training, in controlled scrimmages, not in international games with a lot at stake. The US men's team MUST qualify for the Olympics. This is crucial. We have not been in the Olympics since 2008. An entire generation of young players have missed the opportunity to participate in a "World Cup"-like international tournament. The extra practices, as a team, and then games against some of the world's very best teams is huge in player, and team, development.

The US must win Sunday. Period.

It's the USMNT junior team, U23, that is trying to qualify for the Olympics. New rules for Olympics limits players to being under 24.*

We get Honduras Sunday for all the marbles. It was Honduras that upset the US in 2016. So, it's a rematch. Mexico plays Canada in the other semi-final. Both semi winners automatically qualify for the Olympics since CONCACAF has two slots in the field in Tokyo this summer.

Meanwhile, the USMNT senior team is playing some friendlies. Recently dispatched Jamaica 4-1. Plays Northern Ireland Sunday.

*depending on when a player's birthday is, he can play if just turned 23.

    US 1 Honduras 2

Gave up two chinchy goals, one a dead giveaway, in the span of 2 minutes. Trailed 2-0, got one back on a Jackson Yuell rocket from 24 yards out, and stumbled/fumbled/crapped our pants on three really good chances after that and couldn't equalize. Another uninspiring effort from the coaches, the players, even the team trainers... So, third straight Olympics missed, and third straight major tournament missed, including the last World Cup.

It is true this was really our "C" team at best as a core group of good, young players couldn't get a release from their clubs to play in this qualifying tournament. Unbelievably, that included 3 MLS clubs. Wow.

The USMNT (senior) beat Northern Ireland 2-1, not an inspiring effort either.

    USA 3 Mexico 2

Yeah, baby! beat dem bastards! CONCACAF Nations League Championship Tournament. No matter the tourney or the circumstances it's always good to beat El Tri.

Typical lowlife, scumbag effing Mexican fans threw bottles and full cans of beer at the American players celebrating the go-ahead goal in the 2nd overtime period. Geo Reyna, who had scored to tie the match 1-1 was hit in the head with a bottle and injured. He, all of 18, is one of our young, promising players, and the son of one of the best players to ever don the colors, Claudio Reyna. But one of the cans of beer struck a Mexican player in the face causing a nasty gash.

Weston McKennie is another youngster with tons of potential. He scored the equalizer in the 81st minute on a header off a corner kick. Tremendous athlete with an incredible vertical leap, which he uses to advantage on crosses and corners. Case in point last night. Game winner was a penalty kick by Pulisic. Then minutes later the ref gave the Mexicans a chance to equalizer on a lousy call. Back up keeper Horvath was more than equal to the task making the save and preserving the US's 3-2 lead and eventual victory.

BTW, the US fell behind very quickly, 1st minute, on a stupid turnover in front of our goal by trying to play the ball out of the back in traffic. Berhalter has got to dump that chit. It costs us cheap giveaway goals and costs us games too. And, it does not accomplish anything close to what he thinks it does, even when we do manage to get the ball out of the back safely. The US has not scored a single goal, not one, in 4 years of this tactic, playing from the back. We rarely keep the ball past midfield! It's one thing for a defender to make short passes and the whole side start to advance as a unit, from the back, when our back line is not under pressure. Of course, that is just good, sensible soccer. But that's not what Berhalter is trying to have us do. Last night was just another in a long line of eff-ups and we were fortunate to overcome the cheap goal and win anyway.

    So players...

Weston McKennie is all that and more. The guy is legit and plays full out with a chip on his shoulder. Quickly becoming my favorite player. They compared him to Clint Dempsey in his attitude on the pitch. I love him. Gotta be my favorite player now.

Lots of young talent - Geo Reyena, Tim Weah, Josh Sargent. John Brooks is developing into a much better Defensive Back. His tracking was much better than previous outings.

The wunderkid - Pulisic. He was up and down. Scored the winning goal, but most of the match was held up in traffic with players doubling him. His corner kicks were on target.

Goalies - Steffen is okay. Out of position once and it cost a goal. Horvath came on and was surprisingly good in a big game. Made some huge saves. He needs to get on club level and get playing time. But at 6'3" and long arms the dude has some reach.

Coaching - Playing out of the back. Ive said it before. There is a reason not many national teams play out of the back. It takes A LOT of practice together. I saw a lot of missed passes where they thought a player would be in one place, but the player had already begun their run. This is evidence of not enough time practicing together. They aren't on the same page. So you get lots of turn overs in your own end. The players for the most part were able to recover quickly before too much damage was done, but it took some really tough runs. The times when the GK punted down field are usually the opportunities that led to scores either from set pieces or otherwise. I will have to go back and watch, but I can't think of one time playing out of the back led to a scoring opportunity. I know punting is not "beautiful game" Berhalter wants it to be, but it works. Other successful national teams play this way too. American soccer is built on set pieces, fast break opportunities, and getting the ball downfield quickly. We aren't a possession style team. Never have been.
