While this is was an encouraging gesture by Brees, it also points out the on-going problem he creates for the Saints.
You continually say if Brees were like Brady. Nobody else is like Brady. He's the only QB who's been willing to continually take less to stay in the same place, and I think that says more about Belichick and the New England front office being strong willed than it does about Brady. I'm sure they would move on from Brady if he didn't comply to their wishes, just like they've moved on from every other star player who's come through there over the past 15 years.

I actually want Brees' character on the Saints and not ever Brady's.

More on the continuing saga of the Brees' contract:

Luke is mentioned in the article. Some nice things said about him. Obviously, Luke is the solid back-up to Brees.

Gotta make sure the offensive line is solid before committing to that strategy. Zach Strief getting blown up stops those plays dead in the tracks.

Bree signed an extension today. $22 Million guaranteed each season for the first two seasons. Last three seasons voidable by the team. His cap number falls from $30M to $17.5M this season. I'd day that's pretty team friendly.

    Re: Drew Brees

This is Tom Brady-like and will help the Saints keep other good players. So, that is a positive on Brees' part. And, it's exactly what I have been saying for years too.

There is no doubt....no doubt because we have indisputable historic evidence....that Brees' greed wrecked the Saints with his 2011 deal and we've seen the results on the field. Coming off of back to back 7-9 seasons. Prior to that we had an early exit from the playoffs. So, it's been 4 years since the Saints were relevant when speaking about who might win the NFC and reach the Super Bowl.

Okay, this deal is done and it's time to move on, to look forward. Brees has kept himself in remarkable shape and health. It helps, for his longevity, that he is not a running QB and thus has not been pounded like others. He can play and be productive for two years. The only question will be his arm strength. Thru last season, he still had it. He was throwing some beautiful long balls last year. I expect to see the same this year and next.

His ability as a QB has NEVER been in question. He is one of the best in the league, and has been for the past 10 years. His stats are staggering. He holds 50+ NFL records. He'll probably throw for another 5,000 yards this year and be his usual awesome self. Now, I want to see the Saints, as a whole, measure up and deliver a division title and a high seeding in the playoffs. After that, it's a game-to-game, play-to-play reality. There are other good teams with the same goal: reach the Super Bowl.

Mostly...we need a defense. No, not a "good" defense. Let's start by just HAVING a defense this season. That would help. Back to back years finishing dead last in total defense. It's amazing we were able to win 7 games each year.

For me, well, I can embrace Breesus again...in totality. Glad to see him step up and do something FOR the franchise that took a chance on him back in 2006, when NO ONE else would! A little loyalty and gratitude goes a long way.
