The University is facing a $4.6 million mid-year budget cut and more than twice that for next year. Not to mention our students are at risk of losing scholarships and financial aid, we can't hire new faculty, SACS is saying our accreditation is at risk, and much more.

Yet our AD is negotiating a new deal for our head football coach (Tech's highest paid employee) when he has 2 years remaining on his $500K plus incentives and benefits on his current contract, and we aren't at risk of anyone hiring him away.

probably not--he should be looking for a program that can give student -athletes a scholarship. Do not understand why Holtz would even consider hanging around in La -- he must love it it Ruston. recruiting will be a joke-- "you really want to play in what state?? Louisiana?? you may not have scholarship money much less a subsidy." -- problem for me is I have been posting my concerns about this stuff for years--- the bang we get for our buck ( budget) .. we been bickering about importance of 4 yrs better kickoff coverage average ... does seem pretty silly now

...except that we are probably going to pay him "Dykes money". We could have waited until next fall when this budget mess dies down a little. Having our non-diplomatic AD out there as the face of LaTech during a budget crisis is not wise IMO.

Exactly. Skip isn't signing a new contract without a pay raise. You don't tell the Monroe and Shreveport newspapers that you expect to finalize a new deal for the head football coach (the university's highest paid employee & one of only a few under contract) by the end of the month when the university is in an unprecedented financial crisis with professors who haven't had a raise in 9 years facing furloughs and students fearful of losing scholarships and financial aid. That earns our AD an F- in PR 101.

That earns our AD an F- in PR 101.

The bright side may be that our President will call a strike on him. Not sure how many, but after looking at the report it should be strike 2.

Without an extension, those players would be committing to a coach with only one year left on his contract. That gives our rivals huge fuel for negative recruiting against us. An extension shows the recruits we're trying to bring in that we're committed to this coaching staff for their entire time in Ruston.

I agree. Coach Holtz has done everything for the benefit of the program unlike some of our other past coaches. You pay the man and hope to God he stays for the long haul because he is doing everything the right way and is positioning this program for continued success no matter if he leaves or not. I really appreciate Coach Holtz's professionalism and experience that he brings to our program and he is definitely worth any raise our school can afford.

Like Sonny Dykes did? We just had a recruit decommit because of uncertainty. There is no time like the present.

The Dykes renegotiation was not necessary. That was a BVDV panic.

So we should renegotiate to show our commitment and prevent more 17 year olds for "decommitting"? Because we know we can trust them to do what they say if our coach has a 5 year deal now instead of in November.
