There is no way we can thank Coach H enough for his tireless work for the program both building a base of athletes and raising money ......

Point being you want to pay your coach just enough that he doesn't send out resumes at the end of every season. Paying more than that will be wasted as the Big Boys will pay whatever they want to get whatever they want.
His value to Tech is $600,000 to $700,000 a year plus whatever the alums/foundation wants to add to it. The market value is what we can pay, not what someone else can pay.

Spot on! I mistakenly started reading this thread from the beginning and was shocked at the level of misinformation that was being thrown out there as evidence that we were going astray. It looked like a propaganda war on TECH and many of those on this board were going along with it. Holtz has been very good for this school and is deserving of a raise for his work.

What money? Tech can't even afford full cost of attendance scholarships for our student-athletes. Football, basketball, and volleyball are only getting partial. All our other sports? $0. Until we can get full COA for football and basketball and get baseball on at least partial COA, talk of bumping Tech's highest paid employee's salary even higher is foolish.

You might want to read it a third time. This conversation was never about Skip being deserving of a raise or not. Unfortunately, many misinterpreted it that way. This thread was about the poor timing of our AD negotiating an extension and raise for the University's highest paid employee who wasn't a threat to leave, in the midst of a financial crisis while we have many more pressing needs with much greater ROI.

Who cares how much ULL is paying their roid ragin' cheatin' coach? They are idiots for paying him that much.

ULL is reportedly paying full COA $5,888 to all their student athletes while Tech is reportedly only paying partial COA $2,000 for 4 sports and nothing to the other 12. Where is the outrage about this?

Oh yeah, and Tech also obviously couldn't find the money this year to upgrade our All-Access broadcasts to ESPN3.

    And the list goes on.

I will never understand why some of our fans are so adamant about throwing money away at a coach who isn't going anywhere when the money isn't there. Any money we throw at him wouldn't keep him here if the cartel comes calling, and we have much greater needs.

What's the ROI of throwing several hundred thousand more dollars at Holtz this offseason? Nada other than some fans being able to say "we pay our coach more than you pay your coach nanny nanny boo boo."

You beat me to it, but I would've put Goff's "contract" in quotes!

Maybe they informally agreed to terms for a future contract. I guess that's possible.

Another word for doing a contract "quietly" would be doing it illegally, and we all certainly hope that hasn't happened. Any new contract for a Tech football (or baseball ) coach would be required to be approved by the ULSBOS and published publicly. If not, the "contract" would be null and void.

Unfortunately I still think the state has about 24 months of fiscal crisis looming on the horizon - i.e. The worst is yet to come so GF monies are out

That said his contract has to be reworked, which I think will be done prior to a bowl game this year - I expect a new 3 or 4 year deal with incremental raises with the package starting at $800,000

And we have to address the COA soon

If not it will be used against us by peer institutions in the recruiting game

I think this is much more important than an indoor practice facility

    With that said -

I think Skip has been much more instrumental in raising the monies for the press box than our AD and I really wish the AD would give Skip a swing at piecing together future OOC schedules

Skip has been pretty vocal about our schedule in recent media interviews. Sure, the conference sets a bunch of it, but when you've got 11 weeks without a break, some more savvy on the OOC side would be beneficial.

I agree with your timing. December 2016 is the time to renegotiate. Mid-February 2016 was as stupid as it gets.

McClelland is the one with all the leverage. Skip has none at this time.

Let's see how this season pans out before we say Skip should get a base salary bump to $800K with increases and so many years added to his contract. This is Skip's "contract year." He has earn it.

It would take $178,625/year to turn those partial COA stipends into full COA for those 4 sports. That ought to be guaranteed before we offer Skip any raise IMO.

And yes, COA is our most pressing need IMO. It's probably why our 2017 recruiting is what it is right now.
