So really no surprise that he would propose such a bill. And just think, Dan Reneau once hired Jerry Stovall, who is in the LSU HOF, to be the Tech AD. Do you really think Jerry Stovall was interested in seeing Tech advance, especially during a period when LSU football was in the shitter? Just one of many brilliant moves by our former President.

Why 375 miles? I have no idea how Rep. Carter pulled that number out of his butt. Maybe because 375 miles marks a six hour drive?

It would be 375 miles from the home institution, so for us, it's 375 miles from Louisiana Tech University.

My guess is anything further than 375 miles would necessitate costly airfare for the team, coaches, trainers, and other staff.

How much of a travel budget comes from this fund he mentions?

From the last audit of Tech athletics for FY 2015:

    Total Travel Budget was $2,157,649.

Travel Budget minus football and basketball: $779,325 (3.57% of the total athletic expenditures for FY 2015).

According to the abstract of the bill on the Legislature’s website, the bill would prohibit “athletic programs at public postsecondary institutions that receive state general fund monies from traveling more than 375 miles for athletic competitions.” The bill does provide exemptions for all football programs, basketball programs, and all LSU institutions.

In layman’s terms, House Bill 971 would require the Southern University System Board, the University of Louisiana System Board, and the Louisiana Community and Technical College Board to prohibit its institutions from traveling more than 375 miles from the institution to participate in athletic competitions. Exemptions are made for football and basketball programs, playoff/championship competitions, and any athletic competitions where the opposing team pays for travel and associated costs on behalf of the Louisiana school (i.e. money games or guaranteed games). The LSU System Board is not mentioned in the bill; therefore, LSU, LSU Shreveport, LSU Alexandria, and LSU Eunice would be exempt from the new rules in House Bill 971.

This kind of nonsense only happens in the state of Louisiana. I'm telling ya......sometimes it's right up there with a 3rd world country.

He's trying to force us "mid majors" back into the FCS and Southland.

He should check travel budgets for NSU and McNeese vs. ULM and Lafayette.

Can we just have Texas buy Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Bienville, Lincoln, Jackson, Union, and Ouachita?

No wonder Louisiana struggles as it does with morons like Steve Carter writing ridiculous bills like this.

Republican vs Democrat not the issue. The seas are supposed to part with the mere mention of LSU. State legislation top heavy with LSU lawyers.
