I heard that the cuts currently in place are going to be permanent and Tops is going to be reduced by 60% effectively ending all LA kids get free college. Going to be interesting on how this effects athletics.
Anyone hear this same information?

You are misinformed.
- It's a Louisiana deal not Los Angeles.
- Even if it is only going to be reduced by 60% that leaves 40% funding.
- Currently with 100% funding "college" is far from free for those with even the best grades.
- A reduction in TOPS will hurt baseball the most. A reduction may also hurt other sports, but not like baseball.
- Our shameless lying POS liberal democrat governor is using TOPS as scare tactic. That's all he knows how to do in order to get more taxes passed.

If the cuts and current law stands, TOPS awards would be allocated beginning with students who score 26 or higher on the ACT. There would also be a needs-based component.
I think if this passes, our enrollment will definitely take a hit. If enrollment takes a hit, things will snowball.
25% of our students fall below 26 on core subjects. We would not be hit nearly as hard as some of the lesser UL schools. I'm sure they will make exceptions for some of those who typically get a pass from our legislature.
I beg to differ on how much each kid is paid by tops. The tops payment is based on 80% of what LSU charges so going to La Tech is essentially free to the tops student. Some students even receive cash above there colleges cost while on tops. I could see as many as a 2k to 5k reduction in the amount of students this fall.
I'll be the one to turn it even more political:
Just tell the students to take out as many federal loans as they can. If Clinton or Sanders win, student loans are the next thing to be "forgiven" or "bailed out." So few others seem to care about the effects, why should they?
While not necessarily great for LaTech. This will hurt the worse performing schools considerably more which should leave Tech and LSU being the two universities that are affected least.
Wishful thinking, but hopefully some universities lose too many students and are forced to shut down. Everyone agrees we have too many public universities in the state.
TOPS isn't "going away." Let's change the thread title and not contribute to the hysteria.
I trust my source but it could be wrong. I do not live in Louisiana and I pay full price for my kids education at Tech. I don't want Tech hurt by this but with the idiots running Louisiana are bound to screw it up worse. Everything my source told me was in the ST article but with more details. It is a fact that some Tops students get cash above and beyond the actual total cost to attend a university in Louisiana which is crazy.
Tops being reduced by 60% will result in reduced enrollment. Unless Louisiana people decide to pay for there kid who scores 20 on the act to attend your going to have a steep drop. The vast majority of Louisiana students that are in school today will not get a 26 and only a very few will get a 30. So I estimated based on an enrollment of 12k that at least 2k fewer students with a 5K reduction if 30 is required.
It cost around 20k a year to pay for La Tech so how many students will pay that instead of tops paying.
You call it making it up, I call it an educated projection.
