The best pro quarterbacks of the modern era – Tom Brady and Joe Montana – were both draft-day afterthoughts.Montana supposedly didn't have the arm strength to be a success in the NFL and was taken late in the third round behind quarterbacks such as Jack Thompson and Steve Fuller. Brady, after running a ploddingly slow 5.2 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, wasn't considered athletic enough to make it in NFL. He was taken in the sixth round behind such quarterbacks as Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman, Tee Martin and Spergon Wynn.
Afterward, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. said, "Brady's selection should not affect Patriots backup quarterbacks John Friesz or Michael Bishop."
Kiper is an idiot. Which explains why ESPN puts so much credence in him.
IMO, Tom Brady is one of the greatest oddities of all time. There was absolutely nothing about Tom Brady's college experience that indicated he would make it in the NFL, much less be a Hall of Famer. At Michigan, Brady's stats were downright awful (in his best year as a Jr, he threw for only 2,427 yds), and as you stated he was slower than mollasses. His TD to Interception ratio was horrible.
Frankly, Brady's college stats call into question why anyone would have even drafted him.

To be successful in the NFL, as a QB, requires a lot more than physical ability. While that is important to an extent, between the ears is even more important. Great athletic QBs can out-athlete defenders in college, even playing at the highest level. But in the NFL where even 300 lb DL can run sub-5.0 40s no QB can depend solely on his athleticism to be successful. Even if he can....for a while...he ends up getting hit so much his body is pounded into mush, and w/o his athleticism he is done. Recent examples are RGIII. And, athletic QBs w/o much else, never find success, such as Johnny Football. That crap just doesn't work in the NFL.
The best NFL QBs have been....Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Bart Starr, Bob Greise....and will continue to be....Drew Brees, Tom Brady....those who have the "right stuff" between the ears.

First, my "list" was just a representative sample and was not meant to be all-inclusive. For instance, I did not list Sammy Baugh or Sid Luckman, from back in the day, nor did I list Peyton Manning and John Elway from more recent times.
Secondly, my point was to choose those great NFL QBs who did not have the physical tools as some others, to emphasize my point about the importance of "QB smarts." Bradshaw had a strong arm and was athletic enough to run with the ball and to ward of DLs and buy more time in the pocket. So, he didn't fit the "fails the eye test."
Third, brtansplant, get over yourself. I am objective. Bradshaw is NOT one of the Top 10 all-time great QBs. One list I just looked at, from CBS Sports, lists Bradshaw as 13th, but their list was limited to the Super Bowl era, so QBs like Baugh were not even considered. Bradshaw benefitted from playing on a dominant team, with a great defense. YES! he contributed to the Steelers' success. But the fact the Steelers won 4 SBs has more to do with being an overall great team, and less to do with who was QB.
But, that's OK, put together our own shit list. Here, I'll start it for you, the best pro QBs of all time:
1. Terry Bradshaw
2. Mickey Slaughter
3. Matt Dunigan (I said "pro" not just "NFL")
4. Tim Rattay
5. Luke McCown
and jumping to #6
6. Jeff Driskel
you can add #7 onward....
I have always thought Bradshaw was a great football player and a very good QB.

But that was not the point of my original post.
This may be the most ignorant post I've seen on BB&B in months. I'd like to see some of these more recent QBs play with broken fingers, concussions, etc. For his day Bradshaw was THE STANDAND.
Bradshaw went 4-0 in super bowls, and he was the MVP in two of them. He's in both the NFL and the College Football Halls of Fame. His record is one of the best to ever play the game. When discussing the greats of all time, Bradshaw belongs in the conversation. You may think that CBS Sports is the final authority on who the greatest QB's of all time are, but personally, I think they're full of shit.
Okay then. Bradshaw is the best ALL-TIME!
And there is no 2nd place. That's how much better Bradshaw was.
