Holy Angels in Shreveport (residential facilities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities) is where one of my three sons lives. They are showing $255,718 raised from Give for Good this evening. It is such an awesome place with an incredible staff!!

It appears we ended up with the most donors (275), and only 1 other organization (Holy Angels) eclipsed the 200 donor mark.

    LaTech -- 275 donors, $22,010
    LSUHSCS -- 50 donors, $11,416
    LSUS -- 49 donors, $8,785
    SUSLA -- 28 donors, $2,416
    ULM -- 6 donors, $350
    BPCC -- 3 donors, $320
    NWST -- 3 donors, $120

Thanks to our generous donors, it looks like we earned at least 3 of the extra prizes:
    - $2,500 for Most Donors
    - $500 for Notable Newcomer
    - $500 for 4 AM - 5 AM Golden Ticket Award

It was a one-day deal looking for small grassroots contributions to a generic scholarship fund apart from our annual drives, and this was the first time Tech has ever participated in this. I don't understand how anybody could see this as embarrassing for Tech.
Yep, I'd say it was a very positive day for our area and Tech has nothing to be embarrassed about.

One cannot give to a more worthy cause than the work that Holy Angels provides. It is a hidden jewel of Shreveport. They have their annual walk/run in Mid May. It is a great morning of family fun and an extremely great chance to see what Holy Angels does. All of my friends who have ever visited leave amazed at what they do. It is an awesome treat to bring your own children and watch them mingle.

Does this dilute giving to the real, in-need charities on last list? Grassroots fundraising definitely needs attention, but I have my concerns about this approach?

I agree with you. And, I agree that Holy Angels is probably the most worthwhile charity in the Ark-La-Tex.

On Tuesday I went to latechalumni.org and paid for a lifetime membership to the alumni association. That way I am still taking part in the day of giving, but I know that Tech is getting 100% of my money. My personal preference is giving directly and avoiding extra fees for third party companies, but we all need to find a way to give to La. Tech.

It sounds like a great cause, albeit poorly named.

This fund drive is social media driven by board members and members of non-profits who want to get off their duffs and raise money a different way. In Austin, Texas, a similar online campaign raised more than 8 million. About $500,000 of that was raised by the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

If you don't do the ask, you don't get the donations. . . .

We might need to go find out how the Austin B&G Clubs did it. We might be able to learn some new techniques.

Yes indeed! My son Ryan (32 years old) has been there only 1 year and absolutely loves it!! The staff is awesome and the facilities are fantastic! The Holy Angels "Angel Run" run is May 14 this year.
