I'm not sold on Pete Carroll. He won a superbowl, but I think #2 is too high for him. I agree with them about Mike Zimmer and Bruce Arians. Both are good and under-rated. I would have Payton a little higher and Carroll a little lower. I would put McCarthy (Packers) a little higher than 9, and I would put Jim Caldwell lower than 25. He's horrible.
We'll get a better idea of how good Payton is when he has to try it w/o Brees. If he can win in N.O., or elsewhere, w/o a Hall of Fame QB, then he'll solidify his standing. Until then, he's a good coach who has enjoyed success with a franchise that, historically, has struggled. But, the Saints were also good under coaches, especially under Jim Mora from 1987-1993. If not for the Niners the Saints might have advanced to the Super Bowl one of those years. Well, except for the fact Mora is 0-fer all time in the playoffs...
Point is, while Payton has been the most successful coach in Saints' history, it's not like he's accomplished something "impossible" in New Orleans. And, he's enjoyed this success with Brees at QB. We shall see his true merit when he tries to win with an unproven QB some day.
I think Brees and Payton are successful because of each other. No doubt, Brees is a HoF'er. So is Payton.
