    Flex Seal

You've seen the infomercials where they spray a screen door and it floats a boat, and all their other claims. But, apparently those who have tried it on gutters and other applications report total failure. In fact, some say it may matters worse.

So! has anyone here tried Flex Seal, and if so, what is your opinion of it?

I also hear you can buy a similar product from any auto parts store for about 20% of the Flex Seal price.

    Thanks in advance.

This is funny. I got two reports over lunch the other day. One guy said the screen in the bottom of the boat was BS...didn't work for him. The other guy said the only thing he could get it to stick to was his daughter's pink bike. He said he was spraying some project. The drift got on her bike and stuck, but it did not stick to the project. He said she was not happy.

They aren't prepping their screen door right before spraying the Flex Seal on and heading out into the gulf.

We didn't have great results with it fixing a minor leak under the sink. To top it off, the plumber made fun of me for trying it. I'll try a lot to avoid $110/hr.

    Off topic, but ...

I'm paying this one guy $80/hr for maintenance & updates to my office's 20yo MS-Access database.

Oh, those nights long ago when my roommate would stay up all night to teaching himself code .... and I played Warcraft.

Damn! I guess I need to brush up on my Access Skills. I use to write Access code and make those databases for free.

I use it at work for a few things and it works great...not for plumbing

I have several extra large (80 qt.?) Igloo ice chests. After several years of hardcore tailgating service the interiors began to crack. A little flex seal carefully applied and they are still in service to this day.

Just saying it works in the right applications. Fixing a leaking pipe is not the right application.

I've seen it used in two different applications with some success, but it seems to become brittle and breakdown.

    1. My brother had a camp house that had a small roof leak (3 tab fiberglass shingles) and we sprayed it with multiple layers... one coat, let dry, spay again, let dry, spray again, let dry.

Result: No more leak for the two years he had it

    2. I use a small boat for fishing a pond. I think the brand is "Pond Prowler" by BassPro which is basically a rectangular plastic boat. The area where the boat plug goes through the bottom developed a leak so I sprayed several coats (using same steps above). I sprayed the bottom of the boat in the area of the plug and on the interior floor in the plug area. When you spay it be careful because it gets really messy... it kind of bubbles once it hits the surface and is almost fluffy, and because of that I think it seems like it has air pockets and has a tendency to degrade (May actually degrade from UV rays or long term direct contact with water?). I had to reapply again. It seems to actually work but is not a long term solution. On the same boat, it somehow developed a longer split in the outer shell on the bottom of the boat and I mixed JB Weld, put a thin layer over split, then put a synthetic type mesh in the first layer of JB Weld and them spread a thick layer of JB Weld over that and it has held for several years. JB Weld just happened to be what I had on hand and used.
