Hypothetical Hosting Situation for Tech

This is only a hypothetical discussion, so if you are into "juju" or whatever then skip this thread.

That being said... Did you know that it is possible that Louisiana Tech could host the Super Regional if we win our bracket with National Seed Miss State? Hey, if Fresno State and Rice can win a National Championship, then we can certainly host a Super Regional with some Blue Magic.


6) OK, so how do Super-Regionals work?
The Super-Regionals are basically the middle round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. They're also functionally the Sweet 16 of the event, although as noted earlier they're Best-of-3 series, not single-elimination, loser-goes-home games. National Seeds cannot play one another until the College World Series, so each Super-Regional can contain only one National Seed. On paper (and if results go according to scratch), each Super-Regional is designed to feature a National Seed and another Regional #1 seed, with the National Seed hosting the Super-Regional on their home field. If the National Seed loses in the Regional round, then the surviving teams from that bracket "bid" to serve as the home site. (In effect, the team with the better facilities will probably be chosen to host.) The team with the winning bid gets to host all three games (if necessary), but may not be the "home team" (in terms of batting last) for all three games. If a third game is needed in that situation, they flip a coin to determine which team will be the "home team."

That is probably the case, since they would likely win the 'better facilities' argument. But UL-Laf is very beatable, as we know, so if they both get upset, then Ruston and Tech need to be prepared with a bid to host. This is an incredible LA Tech baseball team and Blue Magic is alive and well!

From the NCAA Tournament's wiki page:

Super Regionals are played at eight locations throughout the country and consist of the 16 surviving teams, matched up by predetermined regional pairings. National seeds cannot meet each other in the super regional and are guaranteed to host. If the national seed in the bracket is eliminated in the regional stage, the super regional will be played at the higher seeded team's field. If the two seeds are the same, the Super Regional will be bid upon by the two competing teams.

This discussion came up a couple of years ago when UL-Lafayette was a national seed and hosted the regional and super regional. The higher seed in your scenario would host. In your scenario, Tech would travel to Arizona for a super regional. There is one caveat, however. I believe the regional and super regional bids had to be turned in at the same time. The NCAA will know going into weekend most of the possible scenarios for hosting in two weeks.

There has been a lot of speculation over the past week that Tech likely did not bid to host. Our AD would know for sure. I suspect Arizona did turn in bids, and they're the higher seed. If UL-Lafayette were to be upset, a regional winning Tech squad would likely only host a super regional if Sam Houston State or Princeton won the Lafayette regional and did not bid to host, as well.

I haven't been able to find any information on it, but the Baseball Committee would have likely seeded the field 1 to 64. If Tech and Sam Houston State both won this weekend, I assume the higher seed would host if neither previously put in a bid. I just haven't seen where the NCAA has made that overall seeding information public.
