LaTech Louisiana's Top Catcher Commits to Tech

Keelyn Johnson ⚾ ⚾‏@keelynjohnson31 6h6 hours ago Officially committed to play baseball at LA Tech!!!

    ✈️Jet H. McCormick ✈️‏@b_hoss_mac 3h3 hours ago My personal, biased opinion: @keelynjohnson31 could be a game-changer for @LATechGGoff. Top-10, in-state recruits don't grow on trees.

Obviously, I'm extremely pleased about this. I've been sitting on it for awhile, and Keelyn made it official today. He has tremendous bat speed and is probably the best prep hitter I've been around. He's about 5-9 and 165 pounds, but he has a solid frame that can add a lot of muscle and weight. What really caught people's attention is the fact that his pop time is MLB-caliber (1.8 seconds), but Keelyn could be a middle infielder or an outfielder. He's just an outstanding baseball player. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't make an immediate impact somewhere in the lineup next season.

So some at lsu are saying he was not going to get a scholarship. (even lsu fans know baseball players don't get much athletic scholarship money). Most in state guys with good grades don't use the limited scholarships available. theprofessor can confirm or deny what's on tigerdroppings.

The trend at some P5 schools and a few from lsu is to spend 1 year playing, then being shipped off to a "farm juco" for development. Even better for them is when they get them in the "farm juco" right out of high school. lsu eunice seems to be the juco of choice for them.

Keelyn was a preferred walk-on at LSU, as are most in-state guys (and most guys no matter what since there are only 11.7 'ships available). In the end, that wasn't going to work for him, so he started looking around for a more feasible option. We've had a good-natured banter all year long about Tech, and he had a connection with Justin Skeesick, another 2016 Tech signee from Shreveport, because they played travel ball together. Keelyn reached out to Tech's coaches, who came to watch him work out, and they offered him enough money to make it work out. I think this is a great opportunity for Keelyn. Do I think he could have played at LSU? Yes. Maybe not next year, but yes. He's that good of a baseball player. I think he can help us immediately, even if it's not behind the plate.

This is very good to hear. I love that Goff is making his mark around the state. Diaz will be the man behind the plate for at least next year, and hopefully this kid is next in line. I love it.
