I learned a lot from the interview.
Thanks Rooster. This is great info. Here's the meat of the interview...
Schools in Bama don't have a merit type tuition waiver like schools in Louisiana (TOPS), Mississippi, or Tennessee.
11.7 'ships is the true limit at Bama. The rest of the money comes from the players, loans, grants, or Bama boosters.
“The coach at Alabama is going to have 11.7 (scholarships). Vanderbilt is going to have double that and it’s perfectly legal because they get tied in with the endowed scholarships. Mississippi State and Ole Miss can come into the state of Alabama and get out-of-state (tuition) waived. It’s creative financing and the lower your scholarship base, the tougher it gets, and 11.7 (scholarships) is as low as you can get with a roster of 35 (total players).” Polk said.
Yikes. Only an idiot would take that Alabama job.
I'd say money-wise coul be a good move. Everyone knows the Bama situation. Three years of good money, get fired and find another job. Could set a guy up for life.
The fact that there is nothing on Alabama's official site or twitter feed about a press conference today is sort of intriguing.
Good old Memorial Gym
Well, that seems a bit hyperbolic. They won 32 games this year with the system and the scholarship limitations they have. (I mean, it's not 42 wins, but everybody can't be us ).
I imagine at Alabama, they have a way of overcoming the scholarship limit (see maddawg's post #4 for hints).
We can't match the money...
We will NEVER be able to match dollar for dollar with the lowest of A-5 conference schools
BUT
Can we continue to improve our offerings and facilities to make these individuals think HARD about leaving each time they have success?
That should be our goal
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
Pay them!
If Goff was smart he would withdraw from the AL offer. Yes he would make more money but like coach white, one more season with what Tech has coming back could get him a dream job. Lets say next year Tech makes the super regionals, Goffs stock would go through the roof. The problem with most coaches is it is all about money right now. I wont begrudge him if he still goes to bama but when he is fired in a couple of years for not winning the $EC, then he will take a huge pay cut on future contracts. The smart thing to do is be patient and wait for your dream job while making the current school your at a consistent winner.
