How does Lafayette offset? They use some obscure ranking that does not include national universities right?

LSU #171 Tech #392 in the nation. And, that is the best Louisiana can do? Anyone else thinking....hmmmmm, well, there are 50 states (or 57 states if you're obummer) and one would think....hope...that Louisiana would, by law of averages, kind of have a school in the top 50, or at least close to it. Being ranked like this, to me, is kind of like being the tallest dwarf in the room.

Now, don't get your panties in a wad. I am always glad to see Tech ranked higher than other state schools, which really, is only telling us something we already knew: Tech is the best! But, looking at this from 30,000 feet shouldn't all Louisianians be concerned we aren't doing better in the national rankings? In the bigger picture this reflects poorly on the state.

That is certainly a valid point, but meter that thought with the fact that there are over 3,000 4-year colleges in the US alone. I was in Boston a few years back talking with some of the faculty from Olin College and mentioned that Louisiana has way too many universities. They replied with the fact that the greater Boston area alone had more than 80 colleges and universities (yes 80, not 8). So look at it as #392 out of 3,000 and you are suddenly top 15% material. Disclaimer for fairness, Forbes does not rank all 3,000.

Where does Louisiana rank, compared to the other 49 states, in colleges per capita? I'm surprised that Boston has 80, but the Boston metro population is about the same as the entire state of Louisiana. The state of Massachusetts also has more money to support colleges, and their private colleges are actually private, unlike Tulane who receives state funds. When it comes to funding colleges, I agree with you that Louisiana has too many.

I used this Wikipedia page for population.

Unfortunately it is neither the per capita nor number of institutions that is problem. The problem is we have more public institutions than we are willing to fund at levels that are adequate for success. As a corollary we are also unwilling to allow the institutions to compete fairly in an open market for tuition dollars or to base state funding on verifiable output measures of success of graduates.

Great point. We've been promised funding based on results many times. Typical Louisiana politics. We are still on the same grade scale as nlulm and Grambling.

I thought the legislature just passed a measure (law?) that now allows individual universities to set their own tuition rates. But, our guvnar has "asked" schools not to raise tuition now due to TOPS being rolled back. (asked put in quotes, because he probably didn't really ask, but rather threatened them)

Tuition is on the November ballot as a constitutional amendment. It is one item to vote for.

Now, don't get your panties in a wad. I am always glad to see Tech ranked higher than other state schools, which really, is only telling us something we already knew: Tech is the best! You omitted Tulane (No. 129).

Most of the schools ranked ahead of Tech are small private schools most people have never heard of. When you compare Tech to our national research university peers, Tech is No. 161. Take out the private schools, and Tech ranks No. 122 among all public colleges. Tech is ranked No. 81 of all colleges in the South. That's all pretty good considering Tech doesn't have the resources of a state flagship university, and Louisiana has cut higher ed more than anybody.

You should probably read about the rankings before drawing ridiculous conclusions.

But NORTHWESTERN STATE IS #9 IN THE NATION, y'all!
