It is widely known that SEC refs cheat for SEC teams. This is like saying "the sun rises in the east." It's a given, an undeniable truth.

In that 1990 Auburn game, they pulled an illegal play to set up the winning FG. Their WR stepped onto the field just before the ball was snapped. We had no one over there, of course, and the guy caught it and ran deep into our territory in the waning seconds.

It wasn't illegal at the time. Our free safety checked into another coverage to account for it, but the DB on that side didn't hear him. Auburn pulled the same thing in a game later that season against Florida State and Bobby Bowden raised hell over it. The NCAA changed the rule to outlaw it the following off-season.

Quote Originally Posted by The Historian View Post
One of the most infamous games in Tech history. There were dozens of other calls and no calls that went against us from an SEC officiating crew. Danny Ford even apologized to Crowton after the game for what happened. The second half in particular was a joke. Even the missed field goal was questionable. Our kicker and holder went directly to the Referee after the "miss" to argue the call. The referee then had a discussion with the official under the goal post who called it wide.

Something similar happened in 1996 when Tech went up 21-7 against Arkansas in the first half. Arkansas' pass rushers began to hit Jason Martin late time after time. Our sideline was going crazy. We didn't get a single call all night, and Martin was knocked out of the game. Also with an SEC officiating crew.

After those two games coupled with what happened to Tech at South Carolina in both 1991 and 1992 where SEC officials were used, Oakes insisted that we have a split crew for Tech's game at Alabama later that season. Tech was using CUSA officials. Bobby Aillet, who was the supervisor of officials for the SEC at the time, did not object. The problems we had with the SEC crews went back to a long-standing grudge the SEC officials had with Tech over Jerry Stovall's decision to drop the SEC as our game officials before the 1991 season because of expenses. It cost the SEC officials assigned to our games paychecks for those Saturdays that season. Everybody was aware of what was going on. The SEC crews were that crooked in that era. They made Tech pay for that for years, even after Stovall was gone.

While Aillet didn't object, Alabama said no to the request and insisted a full SEC crew be used. Oakes then did something I don't know if Dooley or Bruce or Tommy would ever do. He told Alabama that if we didn't get a split crew we would not show up in Tuscaloosa that weekend. We got the split crew. The officials swallowed their whistles. And Tech took the win.

The best part of all of it was on a crucial third down run late in the game. Tech TE Josh Bradley obviously held on the play, but there was no way it was going to get called. Mal Moore, prior to his tenure as Alabama AD, was doing color commentary for Alabama's television broadcasts. When the obvious hold wasn't called, he started screaming. "We've got to have that call".
I can still see that Arkansas defender putting his helmet on Martin's knee to take him out of the game. Martin was picking them apart at the time and Arkansas knew they had to get him out of the game if they were going to win. Our second team QB was awful.

Jared Cornelius is really good. Harris is already our backup MLB. The coaches are enamored with Cole Kelley's potential and think he will be a 3-year starter at QB down the road.

Bielema is really our first coach to put an emphasis on Louisiana. Some great athletes come out of there and LSU can't take all of them. I feel the same way about some south Arkansas kids like Kenneth Dixon that may play at smaller schools and don't get as much attention but are great athletes.
