We are making a mole hill into a mountain!
On the other hand compare the number of blow outs against P5 teams since 2014 and 2015 compared to Bulldog recent history! , In fact the USM debaucle is the only game that we were not in until the very end... That should mean something!

It's easy to be an armchair coach or QB, Coach Holtz has taken us to back to back bowls and with a little luck make that 3 back to back bowls!
Some folks just like to find the smallest things to complaine about!
Mentle mistakes on the field cost us the game in Ark. yesterday...
Move on, correct them and we are going to kick some BUTT for the rest of the season!

This is a message board. We discuss things. Somebody started this thread asking what needs to change in order for us to win these type games. Interesting discussion I thought.

Then you chime in and hope to shut down the discussion with "making a mole hill into a mountain"

Losing these games was not "the smallest things". Losing ALL these games is a genuine concern.

    Kansas St 39-33 (3OT) in 2015
    W Kentucky 41-38 in 2015
    Marshall 26-23 in 2014

    Southern Miss 19-17 in 2011
    Houston 35-34 in 2011
    Southern Miss 13-12 in 2010

That's 11 "close" games that LA Tech lost in overtime or by 3 pts or less. And quite honestly, I thought LA Tech had the better team in all but the TX A&M game. And I didn't even include our 6-point losses at Miss St (in 2011) and Fresno St (in 2010), or our 7-point loss against Utah St (2012).

By contrast, LA Tech has won only 3 games by 3 points or less over that same time period.

    UTEP 38-35 in 2013
    UTSA 34-31 in 2015
    UTEP 17-15 in 2015

The statistics say this program isn't winning its fair share of close football games. My question to each of you is, what does LA Tech need to change in order to start winning more of these "close" games?
The Mississippi State and Utah State 1-TD losses most definitely should be included in your list because those were OVERTIME losses.

It's even worse than I thought. Dawg '06 was kind enough to point out two games that I inadvertently left off the list because I didn't realize they were OVERTIME games. I've made those adjustments to the list now.

    Thanks, '06.

So, LA Tech has 3 wins and THIRTEEN (13) losses in the "close game" situations. That's a winning percentage of only 18.75%. And we lost all four (4) overtime games. That's pretty ridiculous.

Not to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but all those close losses have cost us a many a new fan. Momentum can't be built by losing every one of the close games.

How many of these close losses have been at home? The answer is to schedule more at home. When you play 40% of your games at home and hardly any against the P-5's you shouldn't expect to win that many. I remember only NSU, Houston and Texas A&M (technically) as home games. When you go into places like Arkansas you know you're going to be playing the refs, too. That's why it is so hard. The solution is simple. Play more at home. Sorry for being captain obvious, but it is that simple.

It's a given we are going to play 2 money games each year. Can't play those at home. Many on the list of losses have been played at home.

My question to each of you is, what does LA Tech need to change in order to start winning more of these "close" games?
Well, I don't think it's just one single thing that we can change to win those games. There was a different reason for each loss.

Arkansas: Missed an easy 4th Quarter FG that changed momentum.
Kansas St: Wasn't there a big punt return by K State that changed momentum? Busted coverage on a crucial play on 3rd and 20 for a TD.
WKU: Kickoff return for TD and played against a very good QB who made a bunch of great throws. This wasn't as close as the score indicated as we scored on the last play to make the final score closer.
Marshall: I thought we played well and they were able to pull it out in the end.
NW State: We fumbled the game winning first down run to keep them in it.
ODU: No idea what happened here. We dominated the first half, they dominated the second half. I think we were outcoached in the second half.
Kansas: 2 missed FGs and 2 fumbles inside the 5 yard line.
Texas A&M: This was really a blow out that we made a valiant come back only to fall short.
Utah St: Same as Texas A&M
Miss St: Bad interception in FG range for the game winner.
USM: They were a little better than us, we played well.
Houston: See WKU. A stud QB lit us up. Clock management may have played a role.
USM: They were a little better than us, we played well.

We also won the Central Arkansas game in OT in 2011 (I believe).

Unfortunately Hog makes a good point. The most frustrating thing about being a Tech fan has been that we seem to have a problem handling prosperity. It isn't just individual games or even sports for that matter. We seem to get right to the edge of great things and then, poof.

So, I agree with Hog this one time. It goes to show you that it is true that even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while.

P.S. We had better build that engineering building before the poof happens in academics.
It's time to close the doors to the Temple of Janus.
