1. FIU and FAU are horrible in their own way. For whatever reason, FAU is abysmal on all sides. FIU has a pulse on Defense, but McGough and his offense cannot get on the same page. The offense sputters, and the defense ends up gassed. Gardner at running back is an underutilized talent because the O-line can't get any push whatsoever. Ron Turner is done after this season.
2. UMass is a bad football team. They have enough talent at receiver to do damage, but the neither QB can effectively get the ball to them.
3. WKU may not agree, but White is not Doughty. He isn't as accurate. Taywan Taylor is very good, but appears to be leaps and bounds better than the rest of the WRs. Without Leon Allen in the lineup, and to some extent Ferby, the run game is a weakness. Conditions played a factor, but their offense played very sloppy against Miami (OH). Miami looked as bad as any offense I've seen. Totally inept, and WKU should be embarrassed that they scored 24.
4. Rice: No Receivers to speak of.. QB will be decent one day but he isn't there yet. O-line has not gelled in pass protection, but the run blocking is very good. Dillard is still a good back, and they'll have success until opposing defenses stack the box and force the pass. Secondary is weak, and Baylor shot themselves in the foot quite a bit.
5. MTSU: The Tony Franklin system is beginning to take root. It's not there yet, though. Their run defense did not show up, however. After watching MTSU's game, then Tech's later: I felt the talent at Tech is far beyond what they have at Middle. Our offense will have success. If stockstill is on target, we could see a a track meet. If we see success on the ground with Craft and Scott, it will be a long night for the MUTS.
6. UTSA: UTSA played over their heads against ASU. Dalton Sturm is an EXCELLENT scrambler. He has michael vick type balance and awareness. But without ball magnet Morgan at TE, his passing options are limited, and his mediocre accuracy compounds it. They found success in the run game. I expect UTSA to beat teams who can't defend the rush. Scelfo is still a liability.
7. USM: Mullens regressed last week. I think they just had a bad night. Troy just wanted it more, and anyone could see it. The playcalling in the 4th quarter was terrible. With Mullens off target, and Troy able to contain the running game, especially in the middle, they had no offensive firepower. I was very impressed with Troy's defense.
Over all: Tech has more talent across the roster, ESPECIALLY on offense, than any team I watched. Watching us line up against Texas Tech was like night and day compared to the CUSA ball I watched. Limiting turnovers, controlling the clock with rushing and short passing attempts will be key. Tech should honestly cruise to victory against UMass, Rice, and FIU. UTSA will cause trouble. MTSU and WKU are both very winnable games as long as we control the football. The troy game was an anomaly, IMO. But, Troy did reinforce the formula for beating Southern Miss, which is to make Mullens beat you through the air.
