Freedom is just another word for "nothing left to lose".
Even then, a LOT of philosophical and intellectual writings behind the revolution and what different types wanted came out before during and after the war. Hard to dig past all the popular stuff.
Also, what is the 18th century version of socialism and communism? The ideology behind those are almost exclusively rooted in the 19th century.
Would it be fair to say "big government" (Communism, Socialism) could be rooted in dictators, especially kings. It seems like most kings were tyrants who let the folks eat cake and they took all the wealth for themselves. This is what Communist governments do. Everyone becomes peasants except for the government. Like Al Gore telling everyone to drive a Prius while he flies his jet all over the country.
The idea of America was to let the people rule the government....and the Democrats hate this. Obama complains that the Constitution only hinders government and doesn't let them "do anything for the people."
I was looking to see how deadly the kings were back in the day, but I found the deadliest dictators: (most were leftists, all were big government)
13. Enver Pasha (Military leader). 1.1 to 2.5 million state sanctioned murders.
12. Kim Il Sung (Communist). 1.6 million government sanctioned murders.
11. Ho Chi Minh (Communist). 1.7 million government sanctioned murders.
10. Pol Pot (Communist). 1.7 to 2.4 million government sanctioned murders.
9. Saddam Hussein (Authoritarian). 2 million government sanctioned murders.
8. Yahya Khan (Military). 2 to 12 million government sanctioned murders.
7. Tojo Hideki (Millitary). 4 million government sanctioned murders.
6. Vladimir Lenin (Communist). 4 million government sanctioned murders.
5. Hirohito (Monarchy). 6 million government sanctioned murders.
4. Chiang Kai-Shek (Military). 10 million government sanctioned murders.
3. Adolf Hitler (National Socialist). 17 to 20 million government sanctioned murders.
2. Joseph Stalin (Communist). 40 to 62 million government sanctioned murders.
1. Obama admin's hero... Mao Zedong (Communist). 45 to 75 million government sanctioned murders.
So the idea of the American founders was to prevent this kind of authority. Keep government small, keep the citizens in control, avoid mass murders. We are headed the wrong direction. Too many people trust government and want to be ruled.
Temperament. You don't piss Trump off. But we still have the Constitution (as of today). Both sides need to fight for it so we don't end up with a dictator... from either side.
I have a theory that nations of sufficient size always tend towards socialist or heavily centralized governments. There's just no way to pull together so many diverse cultures without threat of violence (implied or explicit). I think many of the Founders also held that position or some form of it, but I might be talking out my ass there. Just don't think I'm the first to think of it.
