    S'Port

So there's a chance Tech could host the C-USA Championship in Shreveport. As I look at past schedules I can see we used to play there, but stopped (I guess due to bowl snubs/not the desired attendance). As someone who didn't become a diehard Tech fan until the 2007 season, at the wee little age of 11, I'm not too familiar with playing there. Was it ever possible for Tech to gain a great presence in Shreveport and get some great crowds? Because I watched the Maryland-Tech Indy Bowl highlights, and that looked like a huge crowd with the best Tech atmosphere I've ever seen.

Tech has had great crowds in Shreveport for big name opponents - particularly Miami and Texas A&M. Oklahoma State drew a decent crowd - about 33,000. Probably one of the most exciting games there was the last A&M game which was rated number 8 by ESPN for the year.

Historically the old State Fair Rivalry with Northwestern would fill the old stadium pre Shreveport Steamer days (who remembers?) when the stadium capacity was increased from only about 33000 to about 50000.

It's got to be the right game.

If it's a P5 team that will likely pull over the 30K we can hold in JAS, then it's worth it. Miami, A&M, and OSU were not bad (Cal and "first year in WAC" SMU were ok, too).

Random G5 that wouldn't draw in Ruston, either? Not so good. I remember a pretty small crowd for Tulsa one year.

The Grambling thing? Who knows? I guess we can compare it to our future game in Ruston.

I don't think the State Fair Game is relevant to the conversation anymore. That was just a whole different situation from a different era.

If you're going to give up the Ruston atmosphere, you've got to at least get some money out of it.

Depending on who the opponent is, LA Tech can routinely put between 30K and 43K in the stands in Shreveport. Since joining Div 1A (now FBS) football in 1989, here are LA Tech's crowds for every game played in Shreveport:

    1990 Maryland 48,325 (Indy Bowl)
    1995 Tulsa 18,695
    1996 Baylor 29,469
    1997 California 24,812
    1999 Texas A&M 40,328
    2001 SMU 22,505
    2002 Oklahoma State 31,391
    2003 Miami (FL) 43,279
    2004 Tulsa 7,713
2008 Northern Illinois 41,567 (Indy Bowl)
    2010 Grambling 34,762
    2012 Texas A&M 40,453

    12-Game Average = 31,942

By the way, the record for a LA Tech game in Shreveport was set in 1987, when this happened:

    1987 Northwestern St 53,779

    Yeah, I know. weird huh?

I think the message here is, DON'T schedule Tulsa in Shreveport.

Remove those two Tulsa games, and our 10-game average in Shreveport = 35,689

I agree! Games in Shreveport do not feel like home games to me, so I would hope we get well compensated for giving up a game that could possibly be played at our house.

A conference championship in Ruston might draw 20K. In Shreveport 18K.

C-USA championships have never drawn big crowds. Do any of the G5s draw for that game? Not that I recall.

List is missing 2002 vs. UTEP.

Saturday before T'giving. It was sunny, but unseasonably chilly. Tech was already 3-7. Attendance was bleak.

You overlooked the UTEP game in the early 2000's. There was hardly anyone at that game so it all depends upon the team or significance of the game.

I truly hope this thread (Tech hosting the CUSA Championship in SPort) is purely speculative.

Worst idea ever... I'd much rather sell out JAS than get another 5-10K in attendance.

It's true, already confirmed by Tech. They need to start tearing down the old pressbox as soon as the season ends in order to have the new one built by the start of the next year. So after our last game, we won't have a working pressbox and ergo we'll have to play the game in Shreveport.

It's not a bad arrangement IMO. I don't like playing in Shreveport but if it means we play a higher profile match there and in return we get a brand new beautiful pressbox at the Joe, then I'm willing to deal with it.
