JaQwis Dancy Support

I emailed Mary Kay Hungate (NCAA compliance officer) this morning to ask if it would be considered an NCAA violation for a Tech alumnus to send a care package to the Dancy family. Her response is below. If anyone sees an official statement, please post it here so we can all support.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for checking. We are looking in to what we can do for JaQwis and also what our alumni and boosters are able to do in order to show their support. I called the Conference USA office earlier today and should hear something back within the next day or two. JaQwis and his mother are currently at St. Jude’s in Memphis and will remain there until Sunday while JaQwis is receiving treatment. While he is there all of their expenses are covered by St. Jude’s. I will get back in touch with you once I know something. Thanks again for checking and for your support of JaQwis!

At a time like this, it's a shame that this question even has to be asked, but we all know how the NCAA likes to drop the hammer on the "mid majors" while looking the other way for the "P5." But that's a topic for another thread.

Please update everyone if you see an official statement. Hopefully we can help the family without hurting the university.

As much as we all want to help, we need to make sure we are helping in the CORRECT way - don't want to do anything that would inadvertently jeopardize his eligibility

Hi Brad – I just want to update you in regards to what we are trying to do for JaQwis. We will be sending out a release to the media and also posting it on our website shortly. NCAA Bylaw 16.11.1.7 (g) allows us to assist JaQwis and his family with expenses directly related to his illness but we must have receipts for all expenditures. St. Jude covers all expenses for treatment, travel, housing and food while the patient and family member are in Memphis, so we are expecting to be able to help in other ways; for example, providing a laptop, additional tutors, nutritional supplements etc. It’s too early to know all of what Jaqwis may need to get healthy but we intend to do all we can within the NCAA guidelines to help. As the release will explain, we are setting up an account at the Foundation if fans and alumni wish to help. Thanks again for reaching out and for your interest in helping JaQwis. MKH
