I agree.
When I coached I was always really, really hard on my best players. That did several things:
1. assured the "studs" didn't get too comfortable, too arrogant, and lose their focus
2. it showed the whole team I was serious about continued improvement. I did not tolerate players reaching a plateau and then tanking.
3. this motivated the whole team and created kind of a "us vs. the coach" mentality where I saw players helping and encouraging each other.
4. but then, I always spoke with my players one-on-one where I told them how proud I was of them, and that I needed their help to make this team the best it can be.
It worked for me. My teams always over-achieved.
So, if Holtz is employing some of these coaching techniques, kudos to him.
