LaTech Playing starters on Special Teams a Mistake?

Hey all, Holtz said he would try to play more of the starters on special teams to improve our performance. I remember him doing that last year in the middle of the season.

It seemed that about that same time, we started to struggle with some teams (UTSA, SoMiss, UTEP). Does anyone think that the special teams change may have impacted our late season struggles? Anyone fear the same may happen this year as well?

Something's got to be done. Our special teams are the worst I've ever seen.

We could kick it and punt it out of bounds. That would probably be an improvement.

Absolutely -- assume you use defensive starter-- opponents take shots at key players and stuff happens. With our offense that will be 6-8 extra plays to get them hurt in what is a free for all plus staying on field to play defense. Defense may or may not be getting better but doubt going down on kickoffs will help.

SO this is frustrating issue-- take chances with starters or deal with underperforming rookies? I lean towards getting the next 3 games behind us and look at changing for (maybe UTSA) and S MISS.
Sagarin has FIU 159 Rice 143 and NT 140. of course we could lose to any one of these but no reason we should. Protect starters till S Miss if possible

Re: Playing starters on Special Teams a Mistake?

I just went to see who we have on the kickoff team. It doesn't look like a bad group...

    Sneed
    Holly
    Woods
    Cooper
    D. King
    Dunn
    Blankenship
    D. Lewis
    Farris
    Whoever 36 is

Safeties, Corners, and LBs, 1 FB, some starters, some backups. These guys should be able to tackle, imo. It's got to be a coaching issue (stay in your lanes, break down to make the tackle, ??).

Now that I look at it, maybe it's a lack of size? LBs not fast enough to get down there, DBs not big enough to get off blocks?

If Skip is really thinking that he needs starters on special teams, then it should be done now. Get them practice so they will have it down pat for UTSA and USM. Or, if this KO disaster continues, kick it out of bounds around the 20 so they can have it at their 35. 35 is better than midfield!

The only other starters who could be out there would be Prince Sam, Cyril Noland, and Jordan Harris. Maybe Grogan. Santos is too slow.

Not an NCAA issue. We get X number of coaches to do what we want with. He just chooses to do it by committee. It doesn't seem to be working on coverage (and maybe punting).

Re: Playing starters on Special Teams a Mistake?

NCAA allow 1 head coach and 9 assistant coaches ( article11.7.2) our 9 are
wide receiver coach -inside WR - O line -quarterback- corners=defensive line - running backs -defensive co-ordinator -linebackers offensive co-ordinator -safeties coach
that 10 so asst head coach works with receivers and somebody coaches 2 positions
that 9 . NCAA is considering adding special teams coach
Most major programs have no Punter/FG coach--they work on "their craft" by themselves and go to special schools in off season ( Ryan always di)
"tough to sell hiring someone for special teams" if it means not having position coaches He choses to do it by committee because it is ONLY logical option under current rules. Strengh coach is not considered "on field coach" nor 2 graduate assistant

Re: Playing starters on Special Teams a Mistake?

Maybe it's changed in the last hundred years, but kick team and punt team players MUST stay in their lanes and force a slow down. Leaving your lane and going for the tackle is a no-no. I've seen our players playing this way since HCSH began coaching. Special teams greatness is not about athletism (starters), it's about discipline (being coached).

The common denominator is HCSH who has ALWAYS claimed to be the special teams coach.
