Add juco abundance to that. I suppose that's what you meant by "turnover".

As someone said earlier, coach built a team, not a program. Coach used a lot of JUCO's to build his team or maybe a better term is his ticket out of USM to greener pastures. Now USM, and C-USA are paying for that, Like it or not, we want them and all of our conference mates to be better than average at least or none of us will ever have a chance at a good ranking or the CFP.

They are #18 in the nation in Total Defense, but #83 in Scoring Defense. That must mean teams are getting short fields to score on them (turnovers).
USM's defense is ranked so high because their schedule has been so soft. In 2016, USM doesn't play WKU or MTSU at all, and they don't play LA Tech until the last game of the season. Those were the 3 best teams in CUSA coming in to 2016. Combine that with the fact that Marshall has tanked badly this year, and the USM defense has only been tested by a very mediocre ODU. (ODU was run out of the stadium by WKU.) And of course, USM lost that game to ODU last week.

Bottom line....because of the "defensive stats" you cite, USM thinks they are much better than they really are. They don't realize yet just how bad their football team is in 2016. But it's bad. LA Tech should beat USM by 25-30 points on their own field.

USM has had an unnaturally soft schedule in 2016.

    Re: Ryan Higgins

another reason that USM has #1 total defense is due to USM's high turnovers. This gave the opposite team very short field to score against USM's D.

when Ryan caught the d-back It reminded me of Dallas (zaxbe) bowl. Sokol/Dixon chase down Illinois player after turnover-- one knocks ball out-other recovers--forget who did what but it was awesome

I was really hoping that Skip was going to give #14 a chance to come out to an ovation -

I think he tried but things went awry and it didn't work out that way - I think if he had it to do over he would of called a time out and had the team stay out and then run J'mar to the huddle to replace Higgins to give him a chance to walk off before the crowd

Only two years ago and I'm having a brain fart. But, I'll take a jab at it. As I recall, Dixon fumbled, Sokol chased down the Illinois player, making the tackle, and he fumbled and Dixon, who had been hustling the whole time, was johnny on the spot to recover it. Next play...or so...we hit the bomb to Henderson? No, wait...

    Someone help me out here.

    22 min mark

Sokol sacked and fumbled, Dixon chased down the Illinois guy, forced the fumble and Sokol recovered. And it was Henderson on the big pass play.
