Best sports movie ever made! Fact! (or opinion...)
Best documentary -
Caddy Shack, Major League and Tin Cup are hard to beat...
Original "Brian's Song" is probably most tear jerker
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
I love Hossiers. I think it's the best sports movie ever made, followed by Caddy Shack and Bull Durham. The scene that puts it over the top for me with Hossiers is the final scene in the empty gym with only the echos of greatness.
I also have a soft spot for Friday Night Lights. So many of us lived it as high school football players in the 60s, 70s, or 80s. Back in the day where the entire school and in some cases an entire community was focused on that team. The feeling of working incredibly hard to make personal and team goals a reality - along with the parties and everything else that came with it - will stay with me for the rest of my life.
FNL was great - stayed true to the book without much ad lib...
Bull Durham is probably 1A with Major League - just good baseball and as quotable as Caddy Shack
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
The problem with FNL is that the good guys didn't win. In the end, the good guys lost to Jessie Armstead and Carter HS.
Of course, what neither the book or the movie tells you is that Carter had the state championship taken away from them months later by the state of Texas University Interscholastic League Athletic Association for using ineligible players, some who were involved in armed bank robberies, etc..

They didn't in the movie either - they were stopped short -
The credits showed that Mojo won it the next year
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
Hey girl
And the swinging gate...
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
One of my favorite scenes is when their whole team first enters the big arena for the championship finals tournament. Sensing that his players are in awe and overwhelmed by the size of the basketball arena, Gene Hackman quickly gets his players to take out a tape measure and measure the distance from the free throw line to the basket. Then he gets them to measure the height of the basket, etc.... just to make sure the boys know, it's all the same measurements as back home.
"It's spearmint..."
