I blame the Will Tech Blowout USM thread.
Good old Memorial Gym
Well, before this thread is retired to the ash heap of history, it behooves someone (might as well be me) to post a sincere "tip of the hat" to the USM Golden Eagles. Mullens stepped up and performed like senior QB is supposed to with so much on the line.
It's always a trap fans to fall into to continue to focus on their own team and what went wrong after a loss, and too many fail to acknowledge the other side of the equation, in this case USM. They played well and won the game on their own merits. Period.
That was not a "Top 25" team. Far from it. That's what hurts so much.
Nick Mullens had the game of his life --for the 2nd year in a row-- against LA Tech. Mullens finished 29 of 33 for 342 yards and a QB rating of 88.1. He only had 4 incompletions the entire game. And one of those incompletions was an easy TD dropped by a USM wide receiver in the end zone.
That's INSANE!
Meanwhile, Higgins finished the day with 3 interceptions and a 31.3 QB rating. Higgins had no answers, and racked up most of his positive stats late in the game during garbage time against the USM 2's and 3's. Higgins spent most of the day dropping/mishandling footballs, and consistently overthrowing his receivers.
That team normally sucks, but they played like a top 25 team yesterday. Nobody whipped us like that this year...not even close. I would expect top 25 teams to beat us like that. 8 yards rushing, 200 yards passing with 3 ints, 10 "real"points from our offense, running down our throats, leaving our dbs in the dust, pinpoint passing with no drops. They outclassed us at every position.
Yeah, they played like a top 25 team, but they're not. They had to beat us in the last game on their schedule to become bowl eligible. Not losses to good teams either. That's probably a top 100 team at best. That's the team that manhandled and humiliated us. We need to stop looking for excuses and just admit that we were beaten badly by a team we should have beaten. They may have outclassed us, but they aren't more talented. They just happen to have more heart.
I think they had the better coaching. Very impressed with their game plan. They throw a screen pass, block everyone around the receiver and run for 25 yards. We throw a screen pass and our RB is challenged immediately after the catch and has to bust his butt for a yard. They have receivers running right by our corners and a QB who throws a dart in perfect stride for a 30 yard gain and we can't get any separation from their DBs. They hand off a basic dive play and get 4 yards up field before anyone touches him. We hand off a dive play and are dodging DTs in the backfield. We got whooped. They were clearly the better team yesterday, imo. Well oiled machine. But the other times I saw them play, they looked like the three stooges out there.
Our special teams may have been at an all time low yesterday.
Punting was good, but punt coverage not so good. It's like Holtz just gave up on his special teams. Trent making a fair catch with nobody within 15 yards? Trent letting it roll on the next one. Those were not on him. Had to be called (to be safe).
Then on the pooch kicks we have skill guys making a fair catch with nobody near them. We gave up 5 to 20 yards on every one of those.
HCSH played scared all day and it showed.
Have you considered those Dogs?
