Football. @LATEchFB First Bowl Game: 1968 Grantland Rice - latechsports.com

A new article has been posted on www.latechsports.com:

Louisiana Tech's first football bowl game experience was a cool one -- in every way. Those in attendance at the Grantland Rice Bowl in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Saturday, Dec. 14, 1968, will remember that cold day ... if they've thawed out.

OK. Roll call. Who was there? Five of us drove all night the night before and arrived in Nashville in what we considered a blizzard. The poor majorettes were in their skimpy outfits and huddled together under a piece of heavy plastic. There is a picture in the 1969 yearbook showing that.

Majorettes? Are they the old name for the regal blues, color guard, or cheer leaders?

There were only about eight majorettes and one each marched at the head of a column of the band and carried a small baton which she twirled. There may have also been a "feature" baton twirler and of course the drum major(s) who lead the band on the field. We finally got pom pon girls in 1967 or 1968 who danced at basketball games, but we didn't have a dance team for football. Also we only had eight cheerleaders - four guys and four girls - who were elected by the student body. Men cheerleaders were fairly new for us when I started in 1965. As late as 1962-63 the cheerleaders were all female.

Hmmm, I wonder if bringing back that tradition could help increase the student presence at our athletic events?
