There is insurance money available through the student fund if the student-athlete requests it and follows the proper steps and evaluations
I just hope he got good advice and gets drafted and makes either the Saints or an AFC team
Best of luck to him
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
Gosh, Jaylon Ferguson should go to the NFL RIGHT NOW then. So should Dugas and Ethan Reed- they've already become All-Americans so they are 'ready'. I think Henderson is leaving million$$$ on the table for someone else next year. We will see.
Good for Carlos
He is NFL ready with his speed....he needs a team that will give him some time to develop.
Way too much of a risk to come back next year. You guys that are just sooooo sure he could come back and be a first rounder after next year realize he just had two straight years of almost 20 YPC and 1500 this year? Also he doesn't have a redshirt year if he got hurt next year.. huge risk. He is so much better than he was last season with his route tree. He's become a true receiver
he made a huge leap in development from last year to this year. last year he was just a speed guy. now he is a real wide receiver -- running excellent routes and making people miss after the catch. without seeing the stats, it seems like his hands got better too. if he has half of that year-over-year improvement the next two years, he will be one of the top receivers in the nfl.
Carlos has always been fast but now he is fast AND strong! His increase physicality makes him hard to tackle and difficult to out leverage.
Have you considered those Dogs?
Part of the issue for Carlos is the fact - no matter what he does - it's going to be difficult for him to work his way into the 1st round given his height, weight and durability issues at Tech. It would be a surprise if he is picked higher than 40. At the same time, if his combine or workout numbers are average he won't fall past the 90th pick or so. Someone will take a chance on him.
He is very similar in height and weight to Brandin Cooks of the Saints - 5-10 to 5-11, 190 to 195 pounds. Cooks went to the Saints with the 20th pick in 2014. Being that small to get to that pick, Cooks had to be a polished WR that won the Biletnikoff and that had a history of durability along with incredible combine results. He ran a 4.33 40, along with shuttle times 3.81 and 10.72. Incredible numbers.
So in a way Carlos is stuck in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Combine that with money issues and him declaring does make sense.

The draft has also changed drastically in the last 4-5 years with new CBA. Rookie contracts are much more team friendly after the JMarcus Russell and other big flops in first round. Players make their money on contracts #2 and #3 if they last that long. Rookie contracts are 3 years for draft picks so the sooner you get in the better. Hopefully Carlos will work out with Hester and he will put up insane numbers at the combine and go early. He has the speed and talent every team is looking for now so this was an easy decision for him I believe. He could easily go late first or early second round. No one was talking about Vernon Butler going in the first in December last year either. I have no problem with him leaving early. We did RS him so he was here for 4 years and hopefuly he isn't far from graduating and will return to do that soon. He has been fun to watch these years!
Who said the NFL would pay him 1st round money as a 4th rounder cause his mom needs a home? I sure didn't. Dixon is making 600K this year as a 4th rounder. You mean to tell me that 600K a year isn't life changing for a kid who comes from nothing? Is it millions? Heck no it isn't, but the millions isn't guaranteed either. He could easily tear his acl and not get drafted. Could he have an insurance policy for injury? Absolutely, but it wont be worth a ton considering he's not projected a first round pick. The new NFL CBA is setup to where players don't make big money till the 2nd contract anyways. Be happy for the kid.
The "injury" issue --which can mostly be negated with insurance policies, etc-- has been discussed here ad nauseum. Truth is, Henderson is more likely to get injured in a Pro football camp playing against 21-35-year old grown men than he is playing another year of college football against a bunch of 18-21-year old kids.
You're badly mistaken if you think 600K is life changing. Fourth round money --for the sake of argument, 600K a year-- is nothing. By the time his agency/representative gets their cut, the NFLPA union and the union's pension builders get their cut, and other hangers-on (e.g., special trainers, etc..) get their cut, and of course, the Feds get THEIR cut in taxes, the athlete will be left to live on 225K to 300K per year, if he's lucky. Not bad money, but he ain't gonna be busting the bank. Especially if he ends up in a high "cost of living" city like San Francisco or New York, etc...
There's not a lot of athletes in college football today that have an honest to goodness chance to stay in school an extra year and drastically improve their draft status to a potential 1st or 2nd round pick. But IMO, Carlos Henderson is one of those athletes who could.
I sincerely hope that you're right.
But people like you need to quit telling people like me to "just be happy for the kid". I'm a Tech fan too, so I'm obviously "happy for the kid", and wish him the best. But that still doesn't mean this is the best move for him economically. In fact, I would argue that many of you are SELLING HIM SHORT. I feel like Carlos Henderson is a potential 1st round draft choice in 2018, whereas many of you are apparently just damn happy to see him get a job. I don't understand the need for the early exit. It's as if some of you believe he will suddenly grow roots in the off season and not be fast anymore. It's obvious that some (certainly not all) of you just want to see LA Tech send another player to the NFL....whereas my interests lie in what's genuinely best for Carlos. Some of you are just not showing much faith in Carlos.
