We've also seen a lot of the fake injuries over the years designed to slow down our offense.
Maybe there should be a requirement for injuries. If you are injured, you have to sit out the rest of the series for evaluation.
That's a GREAT idea. Someone on the CUSA board posted an article that was seeking ideas about how to "shorten" the length of college football games. This is the best idea I've heard yet, because there's no doubt we spend far too much time catering to prima donas laying on the field.
Mostly they're not prima donnas but players instructed by their coaches to slow down the pace. Instead of making the players lay out a series their team should be just charged a time out if they don't. The rule now is that if an injured player does not leave the field the team is charged a time out. As has been noted injuries that are not to the head, back or legs should be required to get off the field immediately if they can't play. Those who have back or neck injuries are removed on a stretcher and miss at least one series if not the rest of the game anyway. Any injury near the players own side line should be removed quickly.
Dykes/Franklin ran plays away from the opponents sideline in order stay on the fartherest hashmark. Not sure COYHCSH goes to that extreme, but many times these inept C-USA refs have stopped play or not called a penalty to allow illegal substitutions not in our favor. It happened several times this past year.
That doesn't work. First of all, using your "timeout" punishment theory, UMASS would have ran out of "timeouts" very quickly. So what do you do with the rest of them? If you recall, UMASS literally had 15 players go down with injuries in our game. So, your answer is not a viable solution after the first few injuries.
Don't overthink this. The game officials already have enough to think about without putting this on them too. I don't want the game officials' input regarding whether it's a back injury, or a leg injury, etc... Frankly, I'm not interested in their unqualified medical opinion.
So, keep it simple: If you go down with an injury, you sit for the rest of the series..."for evaluation" purposes. It's automatic. It's like a player who loses his helmet now and has to sit out the next play....nobody even has to think about it. And it's amazing how fewer helmets are coming off these days. And I would take this injury rule one-step further: The 2nd time the same player causes a game to be stopped due to an injury, he's done for the half. That's right, he's out for the rest of the half. The 3rd time in the same game, he's out for the remainder of the game.
Too may players are laying on the field, faking injuries, and then coming right back in the next few plays. This behavior disrupts the rhythm of the game and unnecessarily extends the length of the game.
I don't think it would be that difficult to get the rule written. We already go too far in consideration of player safety IMO. This is actually a logical step by their rationalization.
