    Re: The Violent Left

A friend called me last week and said he had a keepsake he wanted me to have. He's a "civil war" historian/buff like me. It was at his mother's house...his 85-yr-old mother. He said swing by, visit, drink some coffee with us. So I did. But, the point is this: his mother was sitting in a rocking chair near the fire, a nice blanket over her, and nearby was a Colt .45 six-shooter, in a holster, with bullets on the belt. I asked about it, was it vintage? His mother says, no, just bought it this year, have never had a gun in my house before, oh except for antique firearms, collectors' items. She says, I bought it to "bust some of those Antifa assholes, if it came down to it." Then my friend laughs and asks his mother if he could show me what else she had. It's a brand new Henry lever-action rifle in .44 magnum. That beast is heavy and kicks on both ends. I hesitated, but did ask if this frail-looking grandmother could handle that rifle? They both grinned, oh yes, been out to the shooting range at Grand Ecore, she can handle it very well!

"bust some of those Antifa assholes," she said. I just shook my head, and said, "glad you're on our side."

Lol. Good on grandmaw. Not sure she’s going to have to fight antifa, but hey. Keep on keeping on.

Stories I’ve been told forever go that bedsteads were flung from Grand Ecore into the river to hinder the Union advance up the Red.

The Red River itself hampered the Union advance. It hadn't rained much that year and the river was at a 30-year low at that time. The Yanks couldn't get their ironclads past Grand Ecore, only their lighter tinclads. Admiral David Porter quipped, "This ain't a river, it's just wet sand!"

The Confederates greatly hampered the advance of the tinclads and troop ships with mobile light artillery fired from the banks. The Yanks' most powerful ship, the ironclad the USS Eastport, was sunk by a torpedo (mine), and went down near Montgomery.

Right, right. All of that is pretty well documented and written about.

I guess you didn’t hear the bedstead story.

Heard something to that effect, but it's just more folklore. Probably some truth to it, as most lore is rooted in truth. Like...

The widow of Grappe's Bluff defiant stand
    legend of the Nankeen shirt
the Nun defending the girls' college
    Mr. Lambert at Double Bridges

    etc...

    Re: The Violent Left

We tread thru some "delicate" times...I am still hoping, praying, and advocating for peaceful solutions to our nation's issues. There are too many folks with itchy trigger fingers who are posting they hope the Left starts a real shooting "civil war." The Left already has, well, not shooting per se, but violent, and now the Left has no reason to start a true civil war because they have stolen the WH. Everyone, and I mean, everyone needs to wait until the Georgia Senate races are settled. If enough good Americans turn out the GOP should be able to overcome the voter fraud the Dems will employ. But, if they steal both seats...then all bets are off.

As I have posted before, I am living on borrowed time anyway. I am a two-time cancer survivor but the doctors tell me it's only a matter of time before it comes back, and the third time won't be the charm for me. I would rather die fighting for America then to die from cancer, under the influence of morphine. I think of my grandkids and want a future for them. I tell myself, what would I do if the house was on fire, me outside and my grandkids still inside...wouldn't I dash in to save them? Of course I would! So, putting myself at risk in a shooting war for their sake is no sacrifice at all.

Besides, I have all this neat stuff...piles of ammo, bombs, a cannon, an F-16 I borrowed from the air force....okay, just kidding about the jet! Might as well go "out to play" with it!

Okay...it's still not what I want. I have posted before about the realities of a true CIVIL WAR, and too many people fail to grasp what it will mean. Just look at what happened during the China virus scare and the great toilet paper war! I saw folks literally fighting over toilet paper at Walmart! Just imagine what will happen when our entire supply chain infrastructure ceases to exist and there's no food to be had. Neighbors will be killing each other over food. Will be like that movie The Purge. As much as I get frustrated and thump my chest, I really do not want to be put into a position of having to take a human life.

Hopefully...as hope springs eternal...the GOP will at least retain the Senate and serve as a firewall against the radical Left. And, again, hopefully, Joe Biden will actually step up and thwart the more radical elements of the Dem Party. I cling to those hopes for now.

The guys claiming to be concerned about America are hoping the GA Socialists win. They are already blaming Trump for what the hope happens.

Eh. Lore perhaps. But not as far fetched as your examples.

I’ve heard that story from someone who heard that story (insert a couple more) from someone who was there. Do remember the Red wasn’t the bass pond it is today, and it’s level at the time of the Union approach northward...

Nothing in the official records, Porter's personal record, or Lt. Stanley Eason's diary who was on the Fort Hindman gunboat and kept meticulous records, or any other of literally hundreds and hundreds of letters, diaries, personal accountings from both sides on bedsteads being an obstacle to the Union fleet trying to pass Grand Ecore. No mention from Mother Mary Hyanith, the surgeon of the 114th NY Infantry, who was assigned to a hospital ship and was on the river for the entire campaign, the battalion commander from that same regiment, whose diary is an incredible read (sorry, I am having a brain fart at the moment and can't remember either's name), likewise the sergeant of the 5th Texas Cavalry whose collection of letters to his sister is always an awesome read...boring at times, but such is life in the army. And, many others I have had the occasion to read.

As for my other examples being "far fetched," well at least there is actual documentation supporting the stories. And, stories they are, wonderful local lore that adds color to the clinical history many of us have studied in great detail. But, as is the case in folklore, they are rooted in some truth.

I do believe I have forgotten more than 99.9999999999999999% of people will ever know about the "civil war" in general, and the Red River Campaign in particular.

Oh...just remembered one of the names, Major Elias Pellet of the 114th NY Infantry.

But, keep posting. I love history and will gladly engage in any discussions about, well, any historical event, and especially on The War for Southern Independence.

Just had another flashback, the surgeon's name is Dr. Harris Beecher, of the 114th NY. My mind is so cluttered with information, it sometimes get lost back there....somewhere.

Violent leftist at it again. When will the left be satisfied with themselves and quit hurting and killing others? Again once you’ve crossed the line of killing helpless babies you’re lost and totally out of focus.

Violent protesters demand Antifa rioters to be released from jail,
The protesters were arrested at a weekend rally in Washington.

A group of violent protesters on Monday gathered outside a Washington jail to demand that Antifa rioters, who were arrested at a weekend rally in the capital, to be released from jail.

A video shared online showed police spraying what appears to be pepper spray at protesters gathered outside the entrance to a jail.

"All Out DC," a group that describes itself as a "collective of DC antifascist activists" announced on Twitter a show of support for the jailed protesters scheduled for Tuesday at noon.

The scuffle comes after chaos erupted in Washington on Saturday night, hours after two pro-Trump rallies ended. Groups of Proud Boys and Antifa activists clashed under cover of darkness, with police repeatedly forcing them apart amid reports of brawls and stabbings.

At least four stabbings occurred near a bar that served as a gathering spot for the Proud Boys. The victims were hospitalized, possibly with life-threatening injuries, a D.C. Fire Department spokesman told the Washington Post.

It wasn't immediately clear which groups the attackers and victims were affiliated with. 23 others were arrested.
