Shouldn't matter. If you seed a team 11th then you're saying they are one of the 44 best teams. Period. They either are, or are not. If St. John's, for instance, is a legit 15 or 16 seed, then seed them that and they play the Tuesday night games. If, legitimately, all the 15 and 16 seeds are small conference teams, then so be it.

The field going to 68 is meant to appease the "Power" conferences who complained that a small league team's champion got in, and a 19-12, 8-8 "Power" team was left out. Well, if you're good, then just getting into the Dance is enough. You have your chance to prove how good you really are after that.

But...it's all BS! The committee is stacked with Jay Bilas types and it's a sham. Last year Final Four participant Loyola-Chicago would not have gotten an at-large berth. They might not have gotten an NIT bid either...it was gonna be close. But they won the auto-bid and snuck in...then all they did was go 4-0 to reach the FF. Meanwhile the overall #1 seed, UVA, lost to Maryland-BC, another team who would have not gotten an at-large bid.

They would have gotten an auto-bid to the NIT since they were MVC regular season champions.
At the end of the season they were 48 RPI.

That's what I still can't get over. The fact Loyola-Chicago would not have made the tournament last season had they been upset in their conference tournament. And yes, it's sickening to listen to Jay Bilas. And as LC coach Porter Moser pointed out last year the VCU and George Mason Final Four runs would have never happened in today's environment. They were at-large entries that would never make the tournament with today's setup.

"I remember being a coach around the country and watching the VCU run and the George Mason run," Moser said. "That wouldn't have happened. Those were at-large bids. Those story lines wouldn't have happened in today's day and age because they wouldn't have got in. I think that's an amazing thought."

They would have ended up in the NIT had they lost in the MVC tournament. But a loss in that tournament would have cost them 7 to 10 spots or more in the RPI and their NCAA hopes would have been over. That's exactly what happened to Tech in 2014. We had a very similar resume to Loyola-Chicago's 2018 resume.

Re: Selection Committee Changes: It's about time

My biggest gripe has always been about power conference teams with losing conference records getting into the field. I think there should be a rule that if a team is under .500 in conference regular season play, then it has to win a conference tournament game to remain in consideration for NCAA selection.

Oklahoma (7-11 Big 12, lost in Big 12 first round) failed to meet that criteria this year. There were two other teams with under .500 conference records that made the field--Minnesota and Ohio State. Both of those teams won a Big Ten tournament game (Minnesota won two). All three of these teams won NCAA first round games.

UNCG had a higher RPI than OKlahoma (32 vs 35), but Oklahoma's NET ranking was 23 spots higher (37 compared to 60). Oklahoma's non-conference NET ranking was 30 spots higher than UNGC (49 at 12-1 compared to 79 at 9-2).

North Carolina State has no gripe for being left out of the field even with a 9-9 ACC record and an ACC Tournament win with a 33 NET ranking. A 351 (out of 353) non-conference NET SOS ranking with 7 home wins against teams 281 and below in the NET rankings justified exclusion.

Here's how you could fix the tournament:

Every team that has a winning record overall and a winning record in conference makes the tourney.

Only the Top 16 teams are seeded. And with some kind of limitation on P5 teams -- maybe at least x number of other teams have to be in the Top 16

Everyone else is seeded by random drawing

Pre-field of 64 games are played at home sites -- also drawn randomly. The Top 16 gets byes if possible

Think of how cool this could be. A team like La. Tech gets in, and draws Oklahoma in the first round -- in Ruston. The excitement would be tremendous. You could get blowout matchups, but you could also get really tough first round games. And you'd probably do it with just one more round to the tourney.

Great for a "La Tech"; not for an "Oklahoma"; never ever gonna happen.

The best basketball EVER played in the TAC were the games vs. Lamar and USL in 1985. We won both games, in tough hard-fought battles. But the way the teams played those nights any of us could have beaten anyone in the country, including the then #1 ranked Georgetown Hoyas with Patrick Ewing. The shooting was unreal. Lamar was a perfect 30 of 30 from the FT line and shot something like 60% from the floor....and still lost, because the Dawgs shot the ball even better against tough defense. USL was unreal on the long-range bombs, they shot 60+% ...in the days before the 3-ptr. Had there been a 3-pt line....well, no, because Russo would have changed our defense to deny them the 3's. As it was we had to let them shoot from 25 feet, and sometimes longer, and damn if they didn't bury 'em. GREAT basketball those nights. Left the TAC knowing I had witnessed "as good as it gets."

Anyway, the Southland Conference was tough those days. As I recall we had just a 7-team conference: Tech, Lamar, USL, McNeese (with Joe Dumars), North Texas State, UT-Arlington, and the JUCO in Monroe. Should have put 4 teams in the Dance.

    • Mitch Barnhart, Kentucky AD
    • Tom Burnett, Southland Conference commissioner

So, RPI aside, should we be playing more SLC teams than SWAC?
