    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

Speaking of drones....here's another historic tidbit for ya.

Many of you know the landing craft used during WW2 for beach landings at Normandy and everywhere else is the Higgins Boat, designed by Andrew Higgins, of Higgins Industries, New Orleans. But, the Higgins boat was also adapted as the US military's first drone.

Two months after the D-Day landings in Normandy, the allies noted the Germans were shifting huge numbers of troops from southern France, entire corps were moving northward to meet the allied invasion. So, a hastily planned invasion was undertook to hit the beaches of southern France, and by August 15, 1944, tens of thousands of allied troops were heading in to shore. The Germans had placed a lot of static defensive measures behind, including concrete obstacles placed hundred+ yards off shore, designed to impale and sink the Higgins boats carrying in troops. We knew about those. So, out in front of the invasion force were Apex boats. These were radio remote-controlled Higgins boats packed with explosives, with a spur extending out 10 feet with a contact plunger. When an Apex "bumped" into one of the concrete obstacles, the boat exploded destroying the obstacle, enough to allow the Higgins, with troops, to pass over the top of whatever was left. They also hit floating mines left by the Germans. It worked like a charm! Better than expected. As a result, not a single Higgins was lost to the obstacles.

By the third day of the invasion, as the 2nd wave was being ferried ashore, and a new landing was underway further north, toward Italy, the Germans introduced another new weapon...the smart bomb. German medium bombers were equipped with laser-guided missiles (bombs), and they were deadly accurate. As a wave of German bombers approached, known to be carrying the smart bombs, the US Navy was prepared. They used special radio jamming signals to disrupt the radio signals the German crews had to send to the bombs as they fell. It worked, and most of the smart bombs were successfully shifted away from the anchored fleet...sitting ducks.

BUT! after the German bombers were chased off by American fighters, an alarming call was dispatched over the radio. It seems that a half dozen Apex boats had gone crazy and were careening straight for the anchored fleet! No one knows for sure, but it is assumed the same radio jamming signals had messed up the guidance system on the Apex drones. Fortunately, a US escort destroyer was under way about to head out on patrol. Risking his ship in shallow waters, the skipper of the destroyer ordered flank speed, and with her guns blazing, she sunk all six Apex drones just before they were about to slam into troop ships and oil tankers. To this day, no one is sure if the radio jamming signals, meant for the German smart bombs, played a role in this near tragedy. The Navy did test the theory months afterwards, but the Apex drones never reacted to the jamming signals, as they might have that day. One engineer thinks it might have been a combination of the US Navy's signals and the German aircrews' signals for their bombs, but they could never duplicate the results trying that.

    Remote-controlled drones.....smart bombs....all in 1944.

    More history...re: The Turks

"They can't be trusted," said the ruler.

"Well, then, why won't you join us in destroying them?" asked his ally.

"Because," said the ruler, "we need them. They are our primary trading partner. And besides, we can always check their incursions when we need to."

The ruler was Sebastian Venier of The Republic of Venice. His ally was Admiral Santa Cruz of Spain.

In the late 16th Century the Ottoman Empire (the Turks) was expanding. They already held all of northern Africa and had captured Cyprus and were threatening Europe itself. The Venetians had only agreed to join a Christian coalition after their entire garrison was butchered at Cyprus, after they had surrendered. The Pope called on Christian Europe to join together and the Holy League was formed in 1570. Nations agreed to commit their armies and navies to sweep the Turks out of the Mediterranean Sea (Med Sea) and remove the immediate threat of invasion. This led to a pivotal naval battle known as the Battle of Lepanto.

The Turks had 320 war ships and began moving toward the coast of southern France the spring of 1571. Spain responded first, under Admiral Santa Cruz. But while he had modern ships, at that time, the famous Spanish galleons, his entire fleet numbered but 40 ships. All Santa Cruz could do was harass the mammoth Ottoman fleet, using hit and run tactics to slow their advance. Finally, word reached the Spaniards....Venice was coming. Known for their shipbuilding skills, their seamanship, and for mustering a powerful navy, the Venetians were a welcomed ally for the Spaniards, and caused the Turks, under fleet commander Uluj, to halt their advance and assume a defensive position. The day of the battle Santa Cruz deployed his 40 galleons, and another 100 other ships sent from various allies. These other vessels were makeshift military crafts, barely seaworthy, and not presenting much of a threat to the powerful warships of the Turks. Still, they were there to fight.

The Turks launched attacks with their galleys, hoping to destroy as much of Santa Cruz's fleet as possible before the Venetians, reported to be less than 40 miles away and closing, could arrive. The Spanish galleons mounted heavy cannons and they used that advantage to shell the Turkish ships at more than 1,200 yards, while staying out of range of the smaller guns the Turks had. But the rest of the ally fleet was vulnerable and the Turks tore into the 100 support crafts, sinking many, and driving off the rest. It looked bleak for Santa Cruz...and then shouts were raised, "The Venetians are here!"

Only SIX ships appeared on the flank of the Turks. Six large ships, called gallesses, was all Venice had sent. They came on with great speed and purpose, but it appeared to be futile gesture. The Turkish commander, Uluj, laughed and pointed at the Venice "fleet." Destroy 'em, he ordered. Santa Cruz was aghast, and he prepared to extricate what was left of his damaged fleet, to save what he could. Then...surprise! The six Venetian ships were true "battleships" they sported 44 heavy guns each. Plowing into the main division of the Turkish navy, the big guns, hidden below deck, were wheeled out. Firing at point blank range, the Venetians destroyed 230 Turkish ships in less than 2 hours. The battle was over, and Uluj fled with what he had left.

It was smashing victory! Santa Cruz lost only 12 of his 40 ships that day, and all 6 of the large Venetian "battleships" sustained only minor damage.

The Barbary Coast, the coast of northern Africa, was now open to a Christian invasion. The isolated garrisons of Turkish troops, now without a navy to support them, would be easy pickings. But, the Venetians refused to participate. As Venier of Venice said to Admiral Santa Cruz, the Ottoman Empire was a valuable trading partner for Venetian commerce. A treaty was signed. In exchange for not invading Africa, the Turks agreed to not build such a fleet again that would serve as an offensive force.

The Holy League had pleaded with Venice to not agree to such a treaty. By your own admission, the Turks cannot be trusted to keep their end of the bargain. But, commerce trumped any military concerns they might have had. And sure enough, the Turks wasted no time rebuilding their fleet and in the years to come, were again threatening to invade Europe.

Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it. We are asking for trouble to trust the Turks today in Syria and Iraq.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

This bit of history also points to another issue, the lack of will to completely crush and wipe out evil in the world. The Venetians only agreed to destroy the Turks' offensive capacity. After that battle, the Turks lacked a sufficient naval force to conduct an invasion of Europe. But they were still just as evil as before, and just as motivated to spread that evil across the world. They butchered people who refused to convert to Islam. Just like all the atrocities ISIS has carried out.

Venice traded with the Ottoman Empire and didn't want to do anything to disturb that commerce. They put "greed"...is it fair to call it "greed"?...ahead of any national, or world, security they might have had. Economic survival is vital to the survival of any nation, true. Can't blame the 16th Century Venetians though, this has been the case before and ever since. We didn't crush the Japanese...we helped them rebuild their nation. Only 4 years after their dastardly, cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor, why, we were best buds!!

We lack the will to crush our enemies. They don't! I guarantee ISIS would murder every man, woman, and child, all 320 million of us, given half a chance. They would do it without remorse too. We don't...why, we are even rebuilding infrastructure in Syria and Iraq, feeling guilty that bridges and such were destroyed during the war. Is this a strength....or a weakness? Our evil enemies see it as a weakness and that emboldens them to keep fighting us.

IDK, but it has been happening since the earliest of times. The Israeli people ignored Gods commands to wipe out their enemies.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

The Israelis have done some serious azz-kicking over the decades they've been a nation (since 1948). I posted a blurb about a tank battle where one battalion of Israeli tanks destroyed something like 1,500 Syrian tanks in only a couple of days of fighting. The problem for them is the same for every other good people/good nation, they are only allowed to defend themselves. The world will support or at least tolerate a nation defending itself, but going beyond that, like launching a counter-invasion to once and for all obliterate your sworn enemies is frowned on.

Oh no! can't have that. You're only allowed to defend yourself, like fight on your own soil. Don't you dare cross the border into enemy territory...that would make you as bad as them. And, so it goes. And, when it comes to economics, and politics, and "arrangements" the world doesn't want some nations destroyed. That is what Israel faces. And in many respects, as do most peaceful nations.

ISIS terrorists kill 4 Americans, and a dozen others in Syria....I'm sure you have all seen this news. ISIS has been reduced to a terrorist organization with isolated cells and a few strongholds scattered in mostly Syrian remote areas. Okay....more on that later.

In the meantime Rand Paul has suddenly become a big Trump ally. The isolationist/libertarian fellow from Kentucky is all giggly about the prospects of pulling out of the region. I suppose our resident self-proclaimed libertarian, goosey, is all in with Trump & Paul in this proposed retreat.

Speaking of "good guy's striking back".

Trump cancels Pelosi’s overseas trip moments before takeoff, after fight to delay SOTU
President Trump on Thursday ordered the postponement of Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s plans for a congressional junket to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan only an hour before its departure was scheduled, announcing that it would be better for her to be in Washington so she could be negotiating over an end to the government shutdown.
“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed,” the president wrote in a letter to Pelosi. “We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.

“In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown.”
He said, of course, if she chose, she still could fly commercial.

The Kurds, knowing they are about to be abandoned by us, are stepping up their anti-ISIS operations in Syria. Need to make hay while the US still has units in Syria to support them, and most importantly, to prevent Russia, Turkey and Assad's Syrians from attacking the Kurds.

ISIS are not human. They are some barely related humanoid-type creatures who live in squalor and sleep in their own crap. Disgusting beasts! And...they are pure evil. The video shot by the Kurds recently, in a Syrian village PREVIOUSLY occupied by ISIS is just disturbing. Body parts of their victims are scattered about, even where they are living. I think ISIS is engaging in cannibalism. This has not been said, reported, but putting 2 and 2 together, and listening to the comments of the Kurdish soldiers, I think it is a very real possibility.

But, dead ISIS creeps can't engage in evil activities anymore. And everywhere the Kurds go, afterward only dead ISIS creeps are found.

WE MUST SUPPORT THE KURDS, NOW AND FOREVER!

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

    What might have been...

have just started reading a book on the Huns, Attila the Hun, and the rest. Interesting tidbit. The Huns were a real thorn in the side of the Ottoman Empire, the Turks. In the late 14th Century, the Huns(Osogoths) were allied with a break-away province of the Ottoman Empire who had rejected Islam in favor of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. These Turks, Christians, allied with the Huns to fight for their independence. The Huns were so powerful they crushed the Turks, the Muslims, in a series of battles that left the empire defenseless. In one such battle the Turks lost 166,000 killed to the Huns/Christian Turks' 17,000, in a fight that lasted 3 days. Two more major battles followed that year, all ending in crushing Hun/Christian victories. The Ottoman Army had been destroyed.

Meantime the Crusaders, led by the valiant Polish Cavalry, had won some minor battles on the perimeter of the Ottoman's holdings in Europe. The ruler of the Ottoman Empire noted, the Christians have only to march to our capital now, and we have nothing to stop them. But the Crusaders did not know this and did not attempt an invasion of the Ottoman's homelands. An opportunity in history missed. One modern historian writes of that time, had the Crusaders invaded they could have wiped out the Ottoman Empire's leadership and done what they will with the people there. An end to Islam? That's the implication.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

    More historic tidbits...

the Italians easily defeated the Turks in the Italio-Turkish war of 1911-12. Yes, the Italians! And it was the Italians who first used aircraft in combat. It was the Royal Air Force of Italy that proved to be the difference in that war. The Turks had no planes at all, so the Italians were free to fly around, dropping bombs, but more importantly scouting Turkish troop movements and providing up to the minute intelligence to the Italian army. Italy expanded into Turkey during 1912 and into 1913 with the ultimate goal was completely occupying Turkey and turning it into an Italian colony. But! World War I broke out in 1914 and the Turks were spared a humiliating defeat. Italy sided with the allies, Britain and France, in WWI and the Turks with Germany. The Italio-Turkish War was the main reason Turkey sided with the Germans.

The more you learn about history, the more you discover you don't know!

I did some quick research and found that, save for Gallipoli, the Turks have mostly been bested by western armies, and usually with crushing defeats. I suppose that should serve as a warning to the Turks today. They should honor their allegiance to NATO, tell Putin and the Persians to take a hike, stop persecuting the Kurds, and just live peacefully knowing the USA would have their backs...if they would just do the right thing.
